  • L.A.’s Wellness Community Rises to Support Fire Victims, First Responders

L.A.’s Wellness Community Rises to Support Fire Victims, First Responders

As wildfires ravage Los Angeles, the city’s wellness community has rallied to support victims and firefighters. From free massages for first responders to meditation sessions, practitioners are providing solace during a time of widespread devastation.

Zuma Beach is now an Incident Command Center for the Los Angeles Fire Department. There, a corner of the lot has transformed into a serene massage station. Organized by the nonprofit Do Good Bus, 13 massage therapists and a chiropractor offer free pain relief to firefighters returning from grueling shifts.

“Our most critical need is helping first responders. That’s what we’re focused on right now,” explains Do Good Bus board member Erika Swartley. “These [firefighters], they’re moving trees, they’re on their feet for really long periods of time. This allows them to renew.”

    Therapists Provide Emotional Support

The emotional toll of the wildfires has mobilized grief therapists across the city. Santa Monica-based therapist Claire Bidwell Smith launched Elegy, an online hub for grief resources. The platform includes articles, book recommendations, and a steadily growing list of therapists donating their services. Bidwell Smith has also started a weekly virtual grief support group for displaced residents and those who have lost homes.

“There are so many aspects coming from this disaster—it feels very similar to COVID times,” she says. “But grief is a really big one that needs to be acknowledged and supported.”

West Hollywood therapist Dana Nassau offers free Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) sessions for fire-related trauma. She explains the program’s value: “It’s a form of trauma therapy that can have a large effect in a relatively short period of time. It essentially shifts how we relate to traumatic experiences.”

A public Google sheet circulating in L.A. lists more than 900 therapists who have offered free services to help residents process their fire-related trauma.

    Yoga and Meditation for Healing

Empowered Yoga Studio in West Adams provides free yoga classes to anyone impacted by the fires. Co-owner Rachel Hirsch explains, “It’s not just the people who are displaced—everyone is impacted. Whole ZIP codes are gone now, and that is traumatic for those people, but it also impacts the city broadly. It’s important to show up for one another, hold space for each other, as we flow through these emotions.”

The studio also hosts donation-based classes to support the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and offers “pay-it-forward packages” purchased by supporters from as far away as Austria and the U.K. “It’s incredible, the outpouring. People care,” Hirsch confirms.

Sweet Antelope is another West Adams organization. They will host a free “Dance Your Ass Off” event for displaced residents. Organizer Kristina Robbins shares, “I truly believe there is no greater source of wellness than a feeling of belonging.”

At Zula Den wellness center, free sessions include reiki, acupuncture, and sound baths. Zula’s creative director, Bar Asolin, explains the impact of these practices: “Sound baths are a form of meditation and allow anyone going through stress a way to deeply unwind. Reiki and breathwork—it helps people process emotions too.”

In Santa Monica, artist Jess Mack leads nature-focused meditations at Merrihew’s Sunset Gardens. “People are feeling really ungrounded—it’s a time of great uncertainty—and this is very regulating,” Mack says. “You use your body and breath as an instrument for healing.”

    Small Acts, Big Impact

Small gestures are also making a difference. Laurel Canyon mobile manicurist Vanessa McCullough offers free manicures and pedicures to evacuees. She explains her motivation: “It’s extremely important to continue to provide yourself with self-care, especially in stressful situations that are out of our control.”

In a symbolic effort, the pro-democracy group 14th Now organized a healing snow ceremony. Members gathered snow in Washington, D.C., and shipped it to L.A. There, it will be melted and poured near the Hollywood sign in what organizer Dael Wilcox calls a “symbol of water to quench and heal the ground.”

    A Community United

Through massages, therapy, yoga, and countless small gestures, Los Angeles’ wellness community is showing the power of collective care. Their selfless efforts provide relief—and hope—to a city facing enormous challenges.

  • Cost of GLP-1 Medication Leads Employers to Nutritional Counseling Solution

Cost of GLP-1 Medication Leads Employers to Nutritional Counseling Solution

With the rising popularity of GLP-1 medications, employers have begun requiring nutritional counseling and coaching to combat how much employees spend on weight loss. It costs more to have diabetes, and weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound are no different.

Seeing the Value of Programs Like Virta Health

Before these medications went mainstream, Virta Health founder and CEO Sami Inkinen approached employers about using his company’s nutrition-oriented digital diabetes program to promote obesity-related weight loss. At the time, no one was interested, but employers sought Virta Health out when costs started to climb.

“Our goal is not to drive the maximum number of GLP-1 prescriptions,” Inkinen stated. “We are the telemedicine company of choice for many employers to responsibly use these drugs, and then also get members off of these drugs and sustain the weight loss nutritionally.”

A Promising Approach to Weight Loss

Virta Health’s nutritional approach was tested in a peer-reviewed study from 2024, and promising results were found. According to the study, patients who participated in Virta Health’s nutrition counseling programs could maintain weight loss one year after they stopped using GLP-1 medications.

Less than 10% of the company’s clients use medication, favoring nutritional counseling. Despite this, Virta Health helps them lose an average of 13% of their body weight within one year.

“Quite frankly,” Inkinen said, “despite the message that maybe the pharma companies are pushing, nobody really wants to be on these drugs forever, if you get the choice and the tools.”

    Rising Cost of Medication

A Business Group on Health survey stated that GLP-1 medications are a top driver of employer plan drug costs. Many employers consider this metric unsustainable and are turning to companies like Virta Health, which offers promising nutrition counseling and coaching services.

“Most employers want their plan members to have access to weight-management medication options, such as GLP-1s, however, they also want to ensure that it’s clinically appropriate and accompanied by the medical and lifestyle modification,” said the vice president of purchaser engagement with Purchaser Business Group on Health Randa Deaton. “[But] we’ve seen that PBMs and drug manufacturers have been reducing their rebates when employers are requiring a lifestyle management intervention as part of the drug criteria.”

    A Growing Business Model

Drug manufacturers are making it harder for employers to offer GLP-1 medication and require lifestyle intervention. They have to consider which is best for supporting workers and their families. Many of them feel that programs like Virta Health will have the most positive impact on their employees. As such, the GLP-1 growth dynamic has pushed the Virta Health startup far enough that it could go public this year—the company was valued at $2 billion in 2021.

A competitor to Virta Health, Omada Health, has also seen a significant increase in attention toward its weight loss management program. When the company partnered with Cigna, program enrollment spiked from 2 million in the second quarter of 2024 to 8 million in the third.

“The market continues to absorb the challenges of affordability [of GLP-1 drugs],” Cigna CEO David Cordani stated. “Clients are observing, and physicians are observing the start-and-stop dynamic that is transpiring for some patients, which also doesn’t generate the desired or intended outcome.”

    An Investment in Long-Term Health

The alternative approaches presented by Virta Health and Omada Health may help limit the indefinite use of GLP-1 medications among employees needing weight loss solutions. As costs for these drugs and other diabetes medications continue to rise, sustainable weight loss programs may be the right investment for employers looking to keep employees healthy for the long term.

Inkinen, for one, is confident in Virta Health’s offerings and the company’s continued growth. He concluded, “If you have a thing that’s working, it is 1,000 times easier to scale your thing, your team, your culture.”

  • Police Raid Casper Smart, J.Lo’s Ex, for Alleged Marijuana Grow Operation

Police Raid Casper Smart, J.Lo’s Ex, for Alleged Marijuana Grow Operation

As the festive season approached, Casper Smart, actor, choreographer, and former boyfriend of pop icon Jennifer Lopez, was embroiled in legal trouble. Just two days before Christmas, police raided Smart’s Los Angeles home following a tip about an alleged cannabis grow operation. The incident unfolded early on December 23, disrupting what should have been a celebratory time of year.

Smart first rose to fame through his high-profile relationship with Lopez and his work in the entertainment industry. He is now facing scrutiny for allegations surrounding the raid. The search has brought renewed attention to his personal life. It raises questions about how the news might impact his career and public image.

The incident also highlights a broader issue: cannabis legalization and the fine line between its personal use and illegal cultivation. California is known for its progressive marijuana laws, but the state still imposes strict regulations on cultivation without proper licensing. For Smart, the raid was not just a legal matter—it was a moment that could define the next chapter of his life.

    The Raid and Its Findings

According to TMZ, police executed a search warrant at Smart’s Los Angeles residence at approximately 9 a.m. on December 23. Authorities were acting on a tip about illegal activity. When officers arrived, Smart was at home with an unidentified woman.

During the search, police uncovered an active marijuana grow operation. They described what they saw as small to medium in size. While the discovery raised concerns, officers did not detain Smart. Instead, they cited and released him at the scene.

The case has since been forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review. Prosecutors will determine whether to file charges. As of now, neither Smart nor his representatives have addressed the incident publicly.

A Complex Past with the Spotlight

The recent raid is not the first time Smart’s personal life has made headlines. Much of his public profile has been shaped by his relationship with Jennifer Lopez. The pair started dating in 2011, shortly after Lopez divorced Marc Anthony. The couple’s on-again, off-again romance lasted five years, capturing significant media attention.

In 2014, the couple’s relationship faced strain when rumors surfaced that Smart had been “sexting transsexual” models. These allegations created a wave of negative press just as Lopez was gearing up for a major performance in her Bronx hometown.

“She’s coming back to The Bronx, and the only thing anyone can talk about is her toyboy and the transsexuals,” a source told Page Six at the time. Another insider noted, “Jennifer is getting tired of all these allegations. She doesn’t need this drama and is ready to move on.”

By 2016, the pair had officially called it quits, reportedly due to Smart’s alleged infidelities.

    Potential Legal and Career Consequences

The cannabis grow operation discovered at Smart’s home underscores the ongoing complexities of California’s marijuana laws. While the state has legalized recreational use and personalized cultivation, strict guidelines govern the amount individuals can grow without a license. Violating these regulations can lead to significant legal repercussions—even in a state with a progressive stance on cannabis.

Should the District Attorney’s Office decide to pursue charges, Smart may face fines or more severe penalties depending on the circumstances of the grow operation. The legal proceedings could also impact his reputation within the entertainment industry, where public image plays a crucial role.

    The Road Ahead

For now, Casper Smart’s future remains uncertain. With the case in legal limbo, he must contend with both public scrutiny and potential legal fallout. While his name has often been associated with high-profile relationships and creative endeavors, this latest development has placed Smart in an entirely different kind of spotlight.

  • Minaret Records Brings Jazz Roaring Back to Life with Winter Festival

Minaret Records Brings Jazz Roaring Back to Life with Winter Festival

The Los Angeles-based record label Minaret Records, which has become a haven for artists in the L.A. jazz scene, is holding its second annual winter festival. It’ll be a weeklong celebration of artists across styles and generations, from solo trombone sets to alt/pop/jazz hybrids, held in pop-up venues across central and northeast L.A.

    About Minaret

Minaret was the brainchild of Yousef Hilmy, who noticed a niche in the L.A. jazz scene: often, his friends who played jazz didn’t have a label or support system.

“I saw in the L.A. jazz scene that there wasn’t really a young label, and there were a lot of really great artists who were sharing space,” Hilmy said. “So I thought of it as something that would champion these young artists [and] try to create a label that could tell the story of L.A. jazz music and really just American jazz music.”

Hilmy, who describes himself as a lifelong music fan, started out by working with artists he knew, eventually building a cult following of devotees in the local music scene.

“I’m Arab, I’m Egyptian, and I grew up in a very ‘hospitality is everything’ culture,” he said. “I try to bring that to Minaret with these shows, just like a feeling of family and familiarity and friendliness—to me, that’s like a really important thing at a time like now that’s very alienated and where people are looking for friendship and community.”

This community ethos extends to Minaret’s work as an event series—the first of which was held immediately before the pandemic and Hilmy had to put it on pause.

“People like to say DIY—I always hesitate because I think what we’re doing has a very high production value—but just in-house, independent, cutting out all the middlemen, all the ticketing platforms, and just really keeping it direct to the audience,” Hilmy said. “That’s my biggest goal with this.”

    About the shows

Rather than a traditional single-day festival, the second annual winter festival is structured as a weeklong series. Many of the events are in repurposed or unconventional venues, such as churches and nonprofit spaces. Each night will have varied offerings, as Hilmy booked double bills for each concert.

“The idea is like, for somebody that’s first getting introduced to Minaret, they can kind of get a feeling of what our shows are like while still having this kind of festival layout,” he said.

While many of Minaret’s signings are younger artists, the festival will feature an intergenerational lineup. For example, Roy McCurdy, known for his recordings with Cannonball Adderley in the 1960s and 1970s, will perform at Highland Park’s Scribble on Tuesday.

“Jazz music a lot of times takes place at bars, which there’s nothing wrong with that,” Hilmy said. “But there are so many young kids, high schoolers, middle schoolers, or even people in college who aren’t 21 yet who are big fans of this music and who contribute—and sometimes those are the people that know the most.”

That inclusivity is especially important to Hilmy during what he called “the time of conglomerates in music.”

“I strive to program very anti-corporate events and really try to keep ticket prices accessible,” Hilmy said. “It’s a community that takes care of each other and where everyone is welcome.”

  • LA County Sheriff Speaks Out Amid Fears of Trump Deportation Plans

LA County Sheriff Speaks Out Amid Fears of Trump Deportation Plans

On November 18th, President-elect Donald Trump confirmed plans to declare a national emergency to carry out his campaign promise of mass deportations of migrants throughout the United States.

LA County Sheriff Robert Luna has responded that his department does not plan to enforce civil immigration, as this does not fall under the department’s duties. However, not all sheriffs in southern California have shared this sentiment.

    President-Elect Trump Confirms Immigration Crackdown

As reported by ABC News, Trump confirmed his plans when he responded to a social media post from Judicial Watch’s Tom Fitton on November 18th. Fitton had posted statements earlier in November that reports demonstrate that the incoming administration is preparing to utilize “military assets” to deport migrants.

Trump responded to Fitton’s statements with the declaration, “TRUE!!!” He has previously pledged to begin mass deportations as soon as he enters office.

“On Day 1, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history to get the criminals out,” Trump was reported saying during a rally at Madison Square Garden near the close of the presidential race.

LA Sheriff’s Department Will Not Change Procedures, Per Sheriff Luna

With fears of mass deportations growing among LA residents, LA County Sheriff Robert Luna has spoken out on his department’s role during these shifts in federal immigration policies. As reported by MSN, Luna states that the department “isn’t changing much” from its current operational procedures.

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department does not enforce civil immigration enforcement …,” Luna stated. “So we’ll continue to do what we do.”

Sheriff Luna continued to elaborate on his fears that immigration crackdowns from local police enforcement could erode public trust.

“There’s a lot of rhetoric, and I don’t want people to be afraid to call the sheriff’s department when they need something,” he asserted. “If they’re a witness to crime, if they’re a victim to a crime, they need to call us.”

However, Luna admitted that the sheriff’s department would continue cooperating with federal agencies upon request.

“Now if somebody at the federal government, one of the agencies, is asking for help, we will assist if they need help,” he stated. “We will do that for any law enforcement agency but it does get very technical in regards to when we do or do not help, but what our community needs to know is don’t be afraid to call the sheriff’s department.”

L Police Department to Not Engage in Immigration Enforcement

Like Chief Luna’s policies, the newly appointed Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell stated at his swearing-in ceremony that his department does not intend to engage in immigration enforcement.

“We’re not in that business,” McDonnell said, according to the article by MSN. Regarding possible crackdowns by local police, he asserted, “We will not be doing any of the things that people are worried about recently.”

Riverside County Sheriff to Welcome New Immigration Enforcement

While Sheriff Luna is working to temper fears of police immigration crackdowns in LA County, other southern California sheriffs have expressed enthusiasm for the coming changes in Federal immigration policies.

According to Fox 11, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco has stated he would welcome the federal government into Riverside County to assist mass deportation efforts undertaken by the Trump administration.

“I will do everything in my power to make sure I keep the residents of Riverside County safe,” stated Sheriff Chad Bianco. “If that involves working somehow around SB 54 with ICE so we can deport these people victimizing us and our residents, you can be 100 percent sure I’m going to do that.”

As the incoming Trump administration continues preparations for aggressive immigration reform, the role of local police enforcement across areas of California with large migrant populations remains to be seen.

  • Lowrider Soul and Cars: The Cultural Symbol of LA Thrives

Lowrider Soul and Cars: The Cultural Symbol of LA Thrives

Lowrider cars were once stigmatized as being associated with gang activity and were targeted by law enforcement, but they have now evolved into an enduring symbol of Chicano pride. The smooth, romantic sounds of lowrider soul music continue to celebrate the rich heritage as it gains global recognition.

    The Origins of Lowriders

A lowrider car has a lowered suspension, a custom paint job, and hydraulics. The vehicles are low to the ground and can bounce up and down. They emerged in Los Angeles’ Mexican-American communities after World War II.

They were initially seen as creative expressions of identity and soon became showcases of technical car expertise and Chicano pride.

    Lowrider Soul

Although lowriders are often associated with hip-hop from the 90s, their traditional music roots are smooth, emotional R&B ballads from the 50s and 60s that feature romantic lyrics. In contrast to the typically gang-affiliated drivers, the romantic songs reflect the depth of the pain many Chicanos endured at the time.

Lowrider’s soul was a spark of inspiration for many Chicano youth. They found hope in the genre’s introspective themes. Those themes of love and family were a stark contrast to the harsh reality of many lowrider’s lives, which often faced poverty, discrimination, and broken families.

A notable Chicano poet, Luis J Rodriguez, says, “Well, these lowrider guys were tough dudes, many street-and-prison hardened, but they were also notoriously ‘romantic.’”

“I think many of us hung on to the illusions of family and home because we didn’t have good families or homes. Those old R&B songs spoke to our depths,” he said.

    Cultural Recognition

Now, lowriders are seen as cultural centerpieces of LA. Their physical beauty and historical meaning are being celebrated in museums, such as Best in Low at LA’s Petersen Automotive Museum. The museums display the beauty and culture while educating audiences about lowrider history.

Newer bands like Thee Sacred Souls are bringing attention to the music of this subculture. They are helping to preserve and revive the legacy of the lowrider soul for a new generation of listeners.

    Lowrider Soul’s Musical Heritage

Soul music, which was originally rooted in Black culture, found another home with Chicano audiences in the 50s and 60s in Los Angeles. The racial segregation during this time created a unity between Black musicians and Chicano listeners, who became supporters of Black soul music.

Notorious Chicano bands like Thee Midniters and Sunny & the Sunliners fused R&B with their own styles, creating the “Eastside sound” that became synonymous with lowrider culture.

    Lowrider Music Revival

Thee Sacred Souls and Thee Sinseers, modern bands, are bringing life back to lowrider soul by creating original tracks that stay true to the sound of the era. These groups pay homage to influential bands like Thee Midniters, whose music remains a foundation of lowrider soul.

With the globalization of music, lowrider culture has reached beyond its Los Angeles origins. The music and automotives have reached Japan, the UK, and beyond. Japanese lowrider enthusiasts have embraced the aesthetic, crediting Chicanos for their influence.

    Cultural Legacy

Lowrider cars and lowrider soul represent a unique cultural combination of art, music, and identity. They are essential to Los Angeles’ rich history and culture. As lowrider culture continues to garner attention, it demonstrates the resilience of the Chicano community.

Modern lowrider music and events promote family and tradition, separating the cultural icon from stereotypes of gang affiliation. These gatherings are intergenerational celebrations of Chicano heritage. Older lowriders come to pass down music and craftsmanship to younger generations.

Experience a history walkthrough with exhibits like Best in Low, a place for automotive lovers to engage with the culture.

The timeless sounds of lowrider soul continue with Got a Story to Tell, the latest album by Thee Sacred Souls, on Daptone Records. The band will play at London’s Jazz Cafe on October 31.

  • LA’s Indie Music Venues Are Struggling to Stay Afloat

LA’s Indie Music Venues Are Struggling to Stay Afloat

LA’s small indie music venues are proud to provide the people of LA with independent artists who are yet to be discovered. They often support underground and niche genres people haven’t heard of before.

These small venues are essential places for up-and-coming bands to play for an audience. Without such locations, these bands often wouldn’t get discovered otherwise. Many of these independently-owned music venues are struggling to stay afloat against competition from corporate-owned venues.

    The Mission of Independent Venues

The owner of Zebulon, Jef Soubiran, says his place “gives access to some people who never listen [to] some free jazz or some avant-garde or some experimental, some minimal, some punk rock,” he said. They can experience a kind of music they wouldn’t have heard anywhere else.

These small spaces give a stage to bands that are lesser-known, experimental, or that don’t conform to the norms of music. Non-mainstream musicians need a place to be staged, too, and indie venues are the place for them to get their foot in the industry’s door.

    Challenges Faced By Indie Venues

As inflation rises and rent prices go up, independently owned venues are struggling to stay open. They are also in competition with major music conglomerates that own venues in the area. AEG runs El Rey, the Shrine, and The Roxy. Live Nation runs The Echo, the Hollywood Palladium, and The Wiltern.

It’s not easy to stay open when these larger venues have a significant source of income for marketing and constant traffic to even their smaller music hubs.

Financial Strategies Indie Venues Are Adopting

Independently-run music venues are taking up two major financial strategies to stay open. The first is a focus on ticket sales. The Lodge Room in Highland Park heavily relies on entry tickets at the door. “We’re not making that much money at the bar,” says the owner, Dalton Gerlach. “We have to survive on ticket sales, so it’s really just a volume thing for us,” he says. In the case of the Lodge Room, the number of people they can get to attend is more important than anything else.

The other strategy is a focus on bar sales, as seen by Gold Diggers in East Hollywood. “The door is a break-even for us. We’re making money off the bar. We want to sell drinks, and that’s what it comes down to,” says the owner, Dave Neupert. However, even with bar sales, the venues are struggling as younger generations are buying fewer drinks.

    Hybrid and Nonprofit Venues

On the other hand, Permanent Records, an independent venue and record store combined, gives all of the ticket sales to the artist. The owner, Lance Barresi, says, “We only take revenue from our shows from the sales we do at the bar and whatever sales we do in the record store. Generally speaking, 60% of our revenue comes from bar sales, 40% from record sales.”

Places like Flow Sanctuary, which operate without a bar or any alcohol, rely solely on donations to stay afloat. “We’re hoping we can do fundraisers and other things that other nonprofits do,” says the owner, “Magick” Mike Milane.

    Rewards Beyond Financial Gains

Although money is vital for staying open, the owners of indie venues find it inherently rewarding to run a place where new artists can get discovered. Jef Soubiran of Zebulon is exposing people to music they’ve never heard before and finds that very rewarding. “You need to have the love of what you do,” he adds.

Gerlach from the Lodge Room says, “The financial reward of it is not really quite there,” but instead, “the social and relational reward of it is there. . . Just being at shows and the community, and there’s so many intangible things around what I get to do that [are] really special.”

Losing indie venues in LA would be losing a piece of the heart of music. Without experimenters and avant-garde artists, LA music risks becoming too homogenous and lackluster. “It’s nice to have [a] different flavor,” says Soubiran.

Preserving these diverse scenes is what maintains LA’s vibrant and eclectic music culture.

Leen Kawas Discusses 3 Financial Issues Biotech Leaders Should Address in 2024

As the United States biotechnology industry continues to expand, the sector’s financial outlook continues its gradual improvement. In 2024, investors are providing increased funding to United States biotechs. That said, more stringent approval criteria are in place. Newer companies, and those without concrete clinical trial data, may find it difficult to obtain their research and operations funding.
Venture capital investments, along with follow-on funding, have been especially strong in 2024. Mergers and acquisitions also continue at an impressive pace. Although these are encouraging trends, initial public offerings (or IPOs) haven’t yet returned to normal levels. Larger-scale economic issues can also fuel a climate of uncertainty.

Overall, however, United States biotechnology firms are optimistic about their future growth prospects. That said, company CEOs and executives should ensure they are well positioned to navigate complex financial challenges. Lack of a proactive strategy can negatively impact the respective company’s forward progress.

Leen Kawas’ Keen Awareness of the United States Biotech Industry

Leen Kawas is Propel Bio Partners’ Managing General Partner. Based in Los Angeles, this steadily expanding biotech-focused venture capital firm works with start-up and early-stage businesses. These fledgling companies typically need financial, technical, and operations guidance. Although Leen Kawas welcomes all candidate pitches, she especially encourages female and minority founders to apply.

Prior to Leen Kawas’ Propel Bio Partners role, she capably served as biotech Athira’s Chief Executive Officer (or CEO). While there, she excelled in the management of multiple drug development cycles. In September 2020, Leen Kawas also successfully managed Athira’s IPO.

Leen Kawas’ well-rounded biotechnology expertise equips her to deliver informed insights on diverse biotech issues. She recommended that biotech leaders address three financial issues impacting their respective companies’ forward progress.

3 Financial Concerns for United States Biotechnology Leaders

Effective biotech leaders are well equipped to handle technological, financial, and organizational challenges that may arise. Specifically, Leen Kawas detailed three financial issues that merit United States’ biotech leaders’ attention.

    Maximization of Appropriate Technology

Biotech leaders acknowledge the importance of remaining current with industry advancements. This knowledge can enable them to proactively identify and pursue new research avenues and business opportunities. Smart use of technology also helps drive more efficient clinical trial execution and achieve better hiring outcomes. Together, these positive developments place the biotech in a stronger competitive position.

    Clinical Trial Advancements

In 2024, artificial intelligence (or AI) and machine learning (a form of AI) are playing ever-larger roles in clinical trials. Decentralized clinical trials are also taking place more often. Together, these technological advancements can produce multiple benefits. Notably, more efficient clinical trials result in lower costs and generate higher-integrity data.

In addition, AI and machine learning algorithms can accurately analyze extremely large datasets. These analyses can help pinpoint patterns and trends that traditional data evaluation methods would overlook. In turn, the intensive data analysis opens the door to highly targeted (and often effective) treatment interventions. This can help drive better trial efficiencies and patient outcomes.

    Diverse Patient Population Recruitment

Clinical trial managers have historically found it difficult to convince diverse patients to participate in clinical trials. Many minority and otherwise underserved patients say they have never been asked to participate in a trial. In a related issue, targeted patients often decline to participate. They say clinical trial management teams often don’t reflect real-life patient demographics.

By harnessing digital platforms and tools, trial sponsors are often able to target a wider patient range (including those in underserved groups). In addition, biomarkers highlight patients more likely to see benefits from a specific therapy. Therefore, trial sponsors can target populations more likely to see positive outcomes from targeted treatments.

    What Investors Want to See

Finally, biotech clinical trial sponsors should understand that investors increasingly want to support companies known for their innovation. Maintaining a commitment to utilize the best available technology helps draw investors’ interest (and ideally their funding dollars).

    Efficient Clinical Trial Capital Allocation

Biotech leaders should ensure that the clinical trial sponsor efficiently allocates capital during each trial phase. A well-planned trial structure, including optimal methodology and endpoint selection, helps reduce the chances of expensive delays. Good trial design also helps decrease the need for unexpected trial arm additions. Again, good planning increases the likelihood of quality data generation, a strong factor in regulatory approval.

    Patient Recruitment and Retention

Clinical trial patient recruitment (and retention) also figure into efficient capital usage. When the trial sponsor utilizes targeted patient recruitment strategies, and takes steps to keep patients engaged throughout the trial duration, dropout rates will be reduced. In turn, this helps keep the trial on schedule and within a preset budget.

Finally, keeping the lines of patient communication open helps build patient trust and fosters a stronger commitment. This increases the trial’s efficiency and leads to more successful outcomes.

    Optimal Clinical Trial Management

As with any longer-term venture, good clinical trial project management increases the chances of timeline and budgetary compliance. The clinical trial sponsor should implement rigorous project management practices designed to gauge ongoing progress. When issues arise, quickly identifying them can spur a timely resolution and optimal resource allocation.

    What Investors Want to See

With intensive competition for investment dollars, investors expect successful candidates to show a favorable return on investment. Biotechs that aggressively integrate capital efficiency maximization strategies raise their chances of obtaining more investment dollars. Other investors may also take note of these successful outcomes.

Realization of CRO Partnership Investment Benefits

Biotechs often partner with contract research organizations (or CROs) that conduct clinical trials on the biotech’s behalf. Leen Kawas noted that a CRO partnership provides the biotech with three key benefits. These advantages can make the biotech a more desirable investment target.

First, the CRO partnership enables the biotech to access the CRO’s proven expertise and research capabilities. This makes the investment less risky, as investors can easily see how their funds will be utilized.

Next, a CRO partnership facilitates the development of a well-structured study and a robust implementation plan. Biotechs, especially early-stage companies, often find it difficult to accomplish these goals without expert guidance.

Finally, a productive CRO partnership can help decrease a clinical trial’s duration and cost. The CRO’s effective clinical trial operation, and avoidance of quality problems that could affect the trial’s outcome, are also key to a positive result. Together, these factors spur capital efficiencies and lead to an improved return on investment.

Why Effective Biotech Financial Leadership is Key

Optimal application of technology can help facilitate a successful clinical trial and a productive hiring campaign. Leen Kawas noted that prudent use of available resources, and effective project management modalities, can help accomplish the stated goal while satisfying return-focused investors.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani became the first player to join the 50-50 club.

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani made Major League Baseball history recently by becoming the first player to enter the 50-50 club. In a September 19 game versus the Florida Marlins, the Japanese slugger belted three home runs to bring his season total to 51. Moreover, he stole two bases to solidify his position in the record books.

    A Game to Remember

The All-Star clocked his 49th round-tripper of the year during the contest’s sixth inning, number 50 in the seventh, and his 51st in the ninth. Oh, he also batted a perfect six for six and became the first major leaguer to knock three home runs and steal two bases in a game.

It was something I wanted to get over as quickly as possible,” Ohtani said through a Japanese interpreter following the tilt. “And, you know, it’s something I’m going to cherish for a very long time.”

On two of his three long balls, the Dodgers standout put the ball in the second deck of LoanDepot Park’s right-center field, the Marlins home. The first shot came off a slider from Florida hurler George Soriano. The other right-center blast came off Marlins second baseman Vidal Brujan in the ninth inning. Florida reliever Mike Baumann served up his 50th shot.

Ohtani’s exploits helped the Dodgers rout their opponents 20-4 in a victory that helped the southern California baseball club secure a playoff berth for the 12th consecutive season.

“To be honest, I’m the one probably most surprised,” he said. “I have no idea where this came from but I’m glad that it was going well today.”

Steal numbers 50 and 51 came in the early innings of the tilt.

In nailing his 50 homers, Ohtani broke the franchise record of 49 previously held by Shawn Green, which had stood up since 2001. He also became the third player in league history to garner at least six hits, three round-trippers, and ten runs batted in a game. Cincinnati Red Walker Cooper and Washington National Anthony Rendon accomplished the feat in 1949 and 2017, respectively.

The revered competitor began his historic evening with a double off Marlins starter Edwin Cabrera and later stole third on a double steal executed with teammate Freddie Freeman. The two steals brought his streak of successful swipes to 28.

It took Ohtani 150 games to check the 50-50 milestone off his list of achievements. He had already attained status as the sixth fastest player to enter the 40-40 club in just 126 contests,

Previously, his season high for home runs was 46, which he tallied as a member of the Los Angeles Angels in 2021. Additionally, the versatile star started 23 games as a pitcher during a campaign that earned him the first of two American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards.

Viewed by many as the game’s best player, Ohtani attained new heights as an offensive force in a season where he opted to take a break from pitching.

He signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with his current club this past December. The noted two-way competitor has plied his craft exclusively as a designated hitter this year following a surgical procedure to repair damaged elbow ligaments.

Ohtani did not reach these heights by accident. With the help of his coaches, he meticulously studied the styles and tendencies of opposing pitchers on video.

His teammate, Dodgers catcher Will Smith, admires Ohtani’s work ethic and credits him for outworking and scouting anyone else.

Several other of his Dodger comrades have enjoyed watching him reach this remarkable milestone.

“I’m honestly kind of trying to learn from him just seeing how he goes about his day-to-day business,” said outfielder Tommy Edman. “He’s very consistent. The same demeanor throughout. “I think that’s why he’s such a good player.”

“Every night, I feel like he’s done something that we haven’t seen,” said third baseman and fellow All-Star Max Muncy.

    Ohtani’s Future

    What’s next on Ohtani’s docket?

The first order of business in the upcoming playoffs. This will be his first career trip to the postseason, as the Angels never qualified for the World Series tournament.

Furthermore, he is in the running for National League MVP. Should he be honored, Ohtani will be the first designated hitter to receive such recognition.
