    Magic Farm, Starring Chloe Sevigny, to Open Los Angeles Festival of Movies

    Amalia Ulman’s Magic Farm debuts as the opening night screening of the second edition of the Los Angeles Festival of Movies. Presented by MUBI and Mezzanine, LAFM will be held from April 3-6, 2025, and will feature more than 20 feature films, a curated shorts roster, an inaugural animation program, and featured artist talks.

    Ullman’s sophomore film is laced with the sardonic humor the filmmaker is known for. The musical score also demonstrates her sense of humor, as the film follows an inept film crew pursuing a celebrated Latin American singer in the wrong country.

    Magic Farm, a MUBI film that had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, will kick the event off at Vidots’ Eagle Theatre on April 3. The independent film was written and directed by Ulman and stars Chloē Sevigny, Simon Rex, and Alex Wolff. Critics have enjoyed the movie, calling it hilarious and charming with a vibrant visual style. Sheri Linden with The Hollywood Reporter states, “Magic Farm features a stupendous cast fully in sync with Ulman’s deadpan absurdity.”

    The film tells the story of a film crew working for an edgy media company who travels to Argentina to profile a local musician, though they are in the wrong country. As the crew works with locals to form a new trend, unexpected connections blossom while a pre-determined medical crisis looms. 

    The acerbic comedy highlights the American film crew’s ineptitude and their Argentine counterparts’ resourcefulness. Cumbia music is present throughout the film, adding nuance to each scene that follows the film crew who travel the world in hopes of exploiting offbeat international stories for sensationalized content. 

    Their new quest finds them chasing the elusive Super Carlitos, a whimsical singer known for wearing bunny ears, residing in San Cristobal. The inept crew travels to the wrong Latin American country and is forced to team up with locals to pursue their target through Argentina. The film follows the sardonic and dry humor from Ullman’s first film, El Planeta. The sophomore film has received warm reviews for Ullman and her work and debuts at LAFM.

    LAFM again partners with Vidiots in Eagle Rock, interdisciplinary space 2220 Arts+ Archives in Historic Filipinotown, and independent theater Now Instant Image Hall in Chinatown as screening venues. The lecture series will be held at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Feliz. 

    Founders Micah Gottlieb and Sarah Winshall collectively said, “After a devastating start to the year for Los Angeles, we feel more inspired than ever about bringing our community together to watch, discuss, and celebrate great movies.”

    The founders continued, “We’re thrilled to host a variety of incredibly stirring and original films from some of the finest emerging international filmmakers, multidisciplinary artists, and top talents. It’s our pleasure to provide a holistic view of independent cinema today.”

    LAFM’s Lineup

    Along with Magic Farm, the festival includes Dennis Cooper and Zac Farley’s Room Temperature, Alexandra Simplson’s No Sleep Till, Grace Glowicki’s Dead Lover, Virgil Vernier’s Cent Mille Milliards, Julian Castronovo’s Debut, Or, Objects of the Field of Debris as Currently Catalogued, Courtney Stephens’ Intervention, and Charlie Shackleton’s Zodiac Killer Report.

    According to the festival’s description, Cooper will participate in an artist talk with Tony Tulathimuttle to “discuss their respective approaches and inspirations in creating aberrant and transgressive depictions of obsession and desire in cinema and literature. ”

    Cartuna presents Animation Today, and the lineup hosts Yoriko Mizushiri’s An Ordinary Life, Jan Sasaka’s Hurikán, Lucas Malbrun’s Margarethe ’89, Jean-Baptiste Peltier and Erika Haglund’s Mont Noir, John Kelly’s Retirement Plan, and Samuel Patthey’s Sans Voix.

Though new trailers or photos were absent, behind-the-scenes footage hinted at an ambitious, large-scale production that promises to deliver what Ross and Matt described as “eight blockbuster movies.”

    The brothers emphasized the emotional weight of this final season. “It’s our most personal story,” Matt shared, recounting the intense year-long production throughout 2024. “There was a lot of crying. There was SO much crying. Everyone put their hearts and souls into it.” The duo revealed they had captured over 650 hours of footage, reflecting on this as their most ambitious season yet.

    New Faces and Familiar Places

    At the event, fans caught glimpses of Linda Hamilton donning a military uniform, promising a formidable presence in the upcoming season. The stakes appear higher than ever, with expansive sets and intricate designs, notably the stunning radio set that suggests major plot developments.

    Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, introduced the behind-the-scenes sizzle reel alongside the Duffer brothers, highlighting their decade-long partnership with the streaming giant. The showrunners reflected on their journey, expressing gratitude and excitement for what’s to come.

    Future of the Stranger Things Universe

    As for the fate of “Stranger Things” beyond Season 5, the Duffers hinted that while the journey for beloved characters like Mike, Hopper, Dustin, Lucas, and Eleven might be concluding, it’s far from the end of the series. Matt stated, “It’s very important to us that anything with the Stranger Things name on it is of the highest quality… It needs to basically just be… awesome.”

    Excitingly, a Stranger Things West End show is set to hit Broadway soon, and an animated series, codenamed Project Mirkwood, has already secured a two-season commitment. Fans can rest assured that any future spin-offs will maintain the high standard the series is known for.

    New Ventures with Upside Down Pictures

    Beyond the world of Hawkins, the Duffer brothers are also expanding their creative footprint through their production company, Upside Down Pictures. Two new projects are slated for release on Netflix in 2026.

    “The Boroughs,” a sci-fi series co-run by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, features a stellar cast, including Geena Davis, Jena Malone, Bill Pullman, and Alfred Molina. Ross described it as a thrilling tale of a group of misfits battling an otherworldly evil, intriguingly set in a retirement community. Ross revealed, “It’s about a group of misfits who fight an otherworldly evil… Only this time, it’s set in a retirement community. It’s fun, scary, and touching, too, and we can’t wait for you to see it,” he added.

    Another project, intriguingly titled “Something Very Bad is Going to Happen,” recently entered production. Ross described the project by saying, “It follows a bride and groom in a chaotic, anxiety-filled week leading up to their wedding.” He also remarked, “The title is accurate. Bad things do happen.” Both the projects did have first-look pictures shown on the stage, but they haven’t been released to the public yet.

    Release Dates and What’s Next

    Unfortunately, a specific release date for “Stranger Things” Season 5 wasn’t confirmed during the event. However, information from other sources reveals a split release between October and November 2025, potentially aligning with Thanksgiving. More updates are expected at Netflix’s TUDUM event in Los Angeles this May.

    As the curtain prepares to fall on one of Netflix’s most iconic series, the Duffer brothers continue to captivate audiences with their ambitious storytelling and new ventures. Fans are eagerly awaiting what promises to be an unforgettable conclusion to the “Stranger Things” saga.

    The longstanding rivalry is keeping fans on the edge of their seats. The possible showdown will bring many eyes back to the court this season. The results may reignite Lakers fans’ confidence or be another notch in the Nuggets’ belt.

    While the Lakers’ come-up this season has been exciting for fans, their path in the Western Conference sets the bar even higher.     Their tongue sandwich is one of their specialties and arrives neatly sliced and wrapped in parchment paper.     Pork Sisig Try Mumshies Kitchen

    Mumshies Kitchen is a Filipino homestyle restaurant. Founded by Frances Vergara in Van Nuys, the former Etihad flight attendant aimed to pursue cooking dreams. The sisig, one of Vergara’s specialties, is made with chopped pork belly, pig ears, pig snout, chicken liver, and onion, accompanied by a properly fried egg and spicy vinegar. The meat is well-chopped and blended with warm, fluffy rice to enhance the flavor of porcine.

    Noodles at Ding’s Garden

    Ding’s Garden has been a neighborhood favorite serving pan-regional Chinese since its opening in 1998 for years. The wok dishes are excellent, including chicken fried noodles and pork chop over fried rice. Their version of dan dan noodles also hit the post, as they are served with extra-long wheat noodles and a spicy, nutty sauce.

    Chicken Drumettes From Thunderbolt

    The cocktail destination Thunderbolt in Historic Filipinotown is close to downtown, and Mama Leah’s chicken drumettes are the perfect snack. Initially inspired by chef Johneric Concordia’s mother, the drumettes feature crisp, sugary outsides and juicy meat within. They are nicely paired with drinks, including the La Frutera #3, which fuses tequila, guanabana, and smoked pineapple.

    Tostadas at Tacos San Miguel Arcangel

    Last but not least, some restaurants make the perfect comfort food. Tacos San Miguel Arcangel, a street stand, evokes feelings of comfort for Mexican taquerias. With sunflower-draped tables, their burritos are served with Oaxacan-styled pollo, tasajo, cecina, and chorizo alongside fluffy telera bread tortas, mulitas, memelas, and quesadillas. 

    However, their tostadas are a standout. They are almost as large as the paper plates served on and topped with grilled tasajo, stringy queso Oaxaca, crisp cabbage, avocado, and tomatillo salsa.

    On November 19th, the results of an audit of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), requested by Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath in February, were publicly released. The audit found various issues, including lax accounting procedures, failing to reclaim millions of dollars in cash advances to contractors, and paying other contractors on time.

    In response, Supervisor Horvath is forwarding a motion to create a new county department to consolidate homelessness contracting within the county. LA. City Councilmember Monica Rodriguez, who sits on the council’s Housing and Homelessness Committee, has since cut ties with the agency.

    Audit Reveals Accounting Deficiencies at the LA Homeless Authority

    The Los Angeles Times reported that the February-issued audit found that the LAHSA needed to establish clear policies on how and when advances to contractors should be paid. Auditor-Controller Oscar.

    In the 57-paid audit, the agency must consistently maintain records for capital advances and provide an accurate list of all contracts and their execution dates.

    Additionally, the audit found that the LAHSA had recovered only $2.5 million of the $50.8 million in Measure H funds advanced in the 2017-18 fiscal year. 

    As of July, the agency had $8 million outstanding from advances from county, city, and state programs made from 2016 to 2023.

    Horvath Calls for a New County-Run Department

    According to an article by The Los Angeles Times, on November 19th, Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath reacted to the audit results by calling for a new county department. Currently, the LAHSA is a city-county joint powers agency. Horvath’s proposed department would consolidate homelessness contracting with the county.

    “The audit findings underscore the urgent need for greater accountability in our homeless services system,” Horvath said. “LAHSA plays an important role, but the current structure is not meeting the scale of this crisis.”

    Rodriguez Introduces New Motion, Cuts Ties to LAHSA. As LAist reported, LA City Councilmember Monica Rodriguez introduced a motion on November 22nd to direct city staff to investigate ways the city could directly contract with service providers and bypass the LAHSA. 

    Councilmember Rodriguez currently sits on the council’s Housing and Homelessness Committee. This new motion signifies her apparent intention to cut ties with the LAHSA following the release of the problematic audit. 

    Rodriguez cited the audit’s findings in a statement, criticizing the practice of providing public funds without contracts and established metrics. “Now is the time for a centralized, transparent system that maximizes taxpayer dollars, saves lives, and addresses homelessness with the focus it deserves,” Rodriguez stated.

    Greater LA Homelessness Shows Decline in 2024 

    Although the audit for the LAHSA revealed apparent mishandling of funds, reports of homelessness in the greater LA area have shown a decline in homeless populations for 2024.

    According to Fox 11, the 2024 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count measured a slight decrease in homelessness after six years of steady increases. The LAHSA reported in June a .27% decline in overall homelessness countywide and a reduction in unsheltered homelessness of 5.1% in the county and 12.7% in the city of LA.

    Paul Rubenstein, LAHSA deputy chief of external relations, made statements regarding the report, attributing the downward trend to “unprecedented policy alignment and investments.”

    As this optimistic report was released before the public release of the February audit, the impact of the audit and possible reorganization of LA homelessness response on unhoused populations remains to be seen. According to the report, these populations include 75,312 unhoused people in the county and 45,252 unhoused in LA.

    Some of the world’s top creators descended on Spotify’s Los Angeles campus earlier today for Now Playing, where the streaming giant unveiled a series of new offerings aimed at helping creators monetize their video podcasts on Spotify better and deepen their relationships with audiences.

    Spotify has long been thought of as a place for streaming audio, with songs and podcasts serving as the streaming company’s bread and butter over the past decade-plus. Now, however, the company is also turning its sights to more visually based entertainment options, with accompanying music videos and video podcasts. The Now Playing event was rooted in highlighting these new offerings and getting some of the world’s foremost audio-rooted talents onboard with these more visual-heavy elements.

    Top Talent in Attendance

    Among the guests who heard from Spotify leaders and mingled with their partnerships and product team members were Drew Afualo, Emma Chamberlain, Bailey Sarian, Haliey Welch, Jay Shetty, Chris Williamson, Josh Richards, Colin Rosenblum and Samir Chaudry, Zach Justice and Jared Bailey, Don Lemon, Anna Sitar, Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, and Andrew Huberman.

    Following a keynote from Spotify CEO and founder Daniel Ek and Co-President Gustav Söderström, creators were invited to attend panels that explored their business opportunities on Spotify.

    The creators of The Good Children, Joe Hegyes and Andrew Muscarella, explained how they found their format, what drives them to innovate, and how to cut through the noise. “We launched right before video podcasts had not only become the norm but the necessity,” they recalled. “We noticed that a lot of podcasts were cutting down video for TikTok clips to get more followers and information out about the podcast.”

    Additionally, those in attendance heard how creators from Higher Learning and NewlyWeds have taken cultural moments and fandoms and built them into successful video podcasts. 

    Pivot to Video

    “Video is more immersive,” stressed Higher Learning’s Van Lathan. “When you can see it, you get a much better sense of somebody’s emotions and personality. It forms a stronger bond with your audience.”

    Furthermore, Spotify monetization experts Geoff Chow and Matt Huang walked the audience of content creators through some helpful tips and insights on how to build a business as a creator on the platform. 

    “We see some shows that are primarily an audio show dipping their toes into video with special episodes,” said Matt. “This program is going to help them monetize all of those different types of content as they’re experimenting and figuring out what works for them.”

    Also, Spotify’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, Dustee Jenkins, got deep with creator Drew Afualo, pop star Meghan Trainor, and Spotify’s Sulinna Ong on the intersecting worlds of music, podcasts, and audiobooks.

    “On Spotify, my podcasts, my audiobook, and my music are all in one place,” said Meghan. “It’s one place, one app where fans can find everything and learn more if they didn’t know I did all that. It’s the best.”

    Closing it Out

    “I truly believe that artists and creators are the ones that change and drive culture,” added Sulinna. “We give you the tools to affect it, but you are the ones who change it.”

    Throughout the afternoon, Spotify also introduced creators to their homes via guided office tours showcasing the 360-degree aspect of Spotify’s support for video production, from the podcast studios to the listening rooms to the seamless recording rooms and edit bays, all available to podcasters and video creators on Spotify.

    To close things out, Spotify brought out global pop sensation Halsey, who proceeded to bring the house down with a special performance of her hits, including “Without Me,” “Lucky,” and “You Should Be Sad.”

    Perhaps no other 1970s car has a more storied legacy in Hollywood than the Ferrari 365 GTB/4, commonly referred to as the “Daytona.” This Ferrari has been coveted by movie stars and rock gods alike and has even had several memorable screen appearances. From The Long Goodbye to 1976’s A Star Is Born to the original Miami Vice TV series, the Daytona has spent several decades being immortalized in film and television.

    Now, the 365 GTB/4 is being revived. Ferrari design head Flavio Manzoni has said the Daytona inspired the brand’s new, $459,000 two-seater, the 12Cilindri.

    A Design Ahead of Its Time

    The automotive design of the Daytona, when it was released in 1968, was an immediate pop-cultural fixture. The vehicles’ design uniquely engaged with the moment’s cultural conversation and influenced future design trends. The late 1960s saw the rise of a more planar and angular language in cars, less adorned and more aligned with the Brutalist trend, having gained a foothold in architecture. Sports cars and supercars followed a similar trend, becoming lower, sharper, and more creased, almost as if they wanted to sneak under detection or slice through it. The Daytona was at the forefront of this trend. 

    Unlike its direct predecessor and nearly every Ferrari before it, it did not consist of voluptuously rounded forms, with prominent eye-like headlamps and a smirking grille. Instead, it was fronted by a razor-sharp prow that looked as though it did not care to meet your gaze and a pursed and nearly invisible grille veiled beneath its hidden pop-up headlamps. It was a radical break from the past and a high-water-mark moment for Ferrari’s cultural impact.

    The Daytona’s Celebrity Legacy

    Nowhere is the vehicle’s impact on pop culture more apparent than when one looks at the laundry list of high-profile, at-their-peak celebrities who drove the Daytona.

    The 12Cilindri: A Modern Tribute

    The new 12Cilindri shares a silhouette with its ‘70s predecessor. Like its ancestor, it also sports a hugely potent V12 engine. This marks it as similarly out-of-time—albeit in a perhaps retrogressive way. As the rest of the auto industry leans into the efficiencies and emissions reductions of turbocharging and electrification, Ferrari’s thirsty, if mellifluous, V12 is an anachronism.

    To say the new 12Cilindri bucks tradition and modern conventions would be an understatement, but in a unique way that keeps it more tonally and thematically in line with Ferrari’s storied past than many of its other most recent creations. Not unlike the actors, rock stars, and athletes who have long coveted and sought after the Daytona, Ferrari’s latest creation doesn’t simply aim to be a part of a cultural conversation, but rather to dictate it.
