  • NASA Radar Imagery Reveals Palos Verdes Landslide Area’s Expansion

NASA Radar Imagery Reveals Palos Verdes Landslide Area’s Expansion

A NASA radar aboard an airplane flew over the decades-old active landslide area on the Palos Verdes Peninsula to reveal that its previous boundaries have expanded. While slow-moving, the analysis determined that the area consistently slid toward the Pacific Ocean by nearly four inches per week.

    Results of NASA’s Analysis

The analysis was carried out by NASA’s Southern California Jet Propulsion Laboratory via airborne radar, measuring the movement of landslides on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County. It occurred during a four-week period in the fall of 2024, and it was observed that the land in the residential area moved about four inches each week, for a total of 12 inches during the observation period. Furthermore, the active landslide area expanded from when it was last mapped in 2007 by the California Geological Survey.

“In effect, we’re seeing that the footprint of land experiencing significant impacts has expanded, and the speed is more than enough to put human life and infrastructure at risk,” said NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory landslide scientist Alexander Handwerger.

Handwerger is the principal investigator for NASA’s upcoming Landslide Climate Change Experiment, which will use similar airborne methods to study the effects of wet and dry precipitation patterns on landslides across some of California’s coastal slopes.

    Potential Causes for Landslide Acceleration

Certain areas of the Palos Verdes Peninsula are part of a historic landslide complex that has been active for at least the past six decades. The complex’s velocity has accelerated and expanded, likely due to unprecedented rainfall across Southern California in 2023 and into 2024. The area has damaged several buildings and affected many others, making it a consistent point of concern for nearby residents.

Fires are also a potential risk for accelerating the historic landslide complex. When waxy leaves are melted by wildfires, they create a hydrophobic layer in similar areas, which can be more easily carried away by water—such as the water brought by consistent rainfall. While rain is beneficial for putting out wildfires, landslides demonstrate where new issues can arise after the fact. In 2022 and 2024, researchers found that a buildup of vegetation and subsequent dry conditions made the county more susceptible to fires.

How Data Was Gathered for Valuable Insight

“To create this visualization,” NASA’s report stated, “the Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) team used data from four flights of NASA’s Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) that took place between Sept. 18 and Oct. 17. The UAVSAR instrument was mounted to a Gulfstream III jet flown out of NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, and the four flights were planned to estimate the speed and direction of the landslides in three dimensions.”

Insights from the UAVSAR flights were also combined with data from the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Sentinel 1A/B satellites, and the analyses were provided to California officials to bolster the state’s response. These resources are also available to the public at NASA’s Disaster Mapping Portal.

The Problem of Landslides in California

Landslides have proven to be a consistent issue across California, especially in coastal areas. The landslide area in the Palos Verdes Peninsula may have been experiencing gradual shifts in terrain for decades, but other areas might experience landslide accelerations due to climate-driven weather extremes. Increased water in the soil in certain areas has brought unanticipated weight and instability to coastal slopes, which may result in new and faster-moving landslides across the state.

    A Predictive Solution

What this means for California infrastructure, including roads and communities, is uncertain, but long-term monitoring will be key to maintaining safety by predicting future shifts in the landscape. By expanding radar flights and monitoring high-risk regions, California can prepare itself for a range of future issues.

  • L.A.’s Wellness Community Rises to Support Fire Victims, First Responders

L.A.’s Wellness Community Rises to Support Fire Victims, First Responders

As wildfires ravage Los Angeles, the city’s wellness community has rallied to support victims and firefighters. From free massages for first responders to meditation sessions, practitioners are providing solace during a time of widespread devastation.

Zuma Beach is now an Incident Command Center for the Los Angeles Fire Department. There, a corner of the lot has transformed into a serene massage station. Organized by the nonprofit Do Good Bus, 13 massage therapists and a chiropractor offer free pain relief to firefighters returning from grueling shifts.

“Our most critical need is helping first responders. That’s what we’re focused on right now,” explains Do Good Bus board member Erika Swartley. “These [firefighters], they’re moving trees, they’re on their feet for really long periods of time. This allows them to renew.”

    Therapists Provide Emotional Support

The emotional toll of the wildfires has mobilized grief therapists across the city. Santa Monica-based therapist Claire Bidwell Smith launched Elegy, an online hub for grief resources. The platform includes articles, book recommendations, and a steadily growing list of therapists donating their services. Bidwell Smith has also started a weekly virtual grief support group for displaced residents and those who have lost homes.

“There are so many aspects coming from this disaster—it feels very similar to COVID times,” she says. “But grief is a really big one that needs to be acknowledged and supported.”

West Hollywood therapist Dana Nassau offers free Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) sessions for fire-related trauma. She explains the program’s value: “It’s a form of trauma therapy that can have a large effect in a relatively short period of time. It essentially shifts how we relate to traumatic experiences.”

A public Google sheet circulating in L.A. lists more than 900 therapists who have offered free services to help residents process their fire-related trauma.

    Yoga and Meditation for Healing

Empowered Yoga Studio in West Adams provides free yoga classes to anyone impacted by the fires. Co-owner Rachel Hirsch explains, “It’s not just the people who are displaced—everyone is impacted. Whole ZIP codes are gone now, and that is traumatic for those people, but it also impacts the city broadly. It’s important to show up for one another, hold space for each other, as we flow through these emotions.”

The studio also hosts donation-based classes to support the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and offers “pay-it-forward packages” purchased by supporters from as far away as Austria and the U.K. “It’s incredible, the outpouring. People care,” Hirsch confirms.

Sweet Antelope is another West Adams organization. They will host a free “Dance Your Ass Off” event for displaced residents. Organizer Kristina Robbins shares, “I truly believe there is no greater source of wellness than a feeling of belonging.”

At Zula Den wellness center, free sessions include reiki, acupuncture, and sound baths. Zula’s creative director, Bar Asolin, explains the impact of these practices: “Sound baths are a form of meditation and allow anyone going through stress a way to deeply unwind. Reiki and breathwork—it helps people process emotions too.”

In Santa Monica, artist Jess Mack leads nature-focused meditations at Merrihew’s Sunset Gardens. “People are feeling really ungrounded—it’s a time of great uncertainty—and this is very regulating,” Mack says. “You use your body and breath as an instrument for healing.”

    Small Acts, Big Impact

Small gestures are also making a difference. Laurel Canyon mobile manicurist Vanessa McCullough offers free manicures and pedicures to evacuees. She explains her motivation: “It’s extremely important to continue to provide yourself with self-care, especially in stressful situations that are out of our control.”

In a symbolic effort, the pro-democracy group 14th Now organized a healing snow ceremony. Members gathered snow in Washington, D.C., and shipped it to L.A. There, it will be melted and poured near the Hollywood sign in what organizer Dael Wilcox calls a “symbol of water to quench and heal the ground.”

    A Community United

Through massages, therapy, yoga, and countless small gestures, Los Angeles’ wellness community is showing the power of collective care. Their selfless efforts provide relief—and hope—to a city facing enormous challenges.

  • Cost of GLP-1 Medication Leads Employers to Nutritional Counseling Solution

Cost of GLP-1 Medication Leads Employers to Nutritional Counseling Solution

With the rising popularity of GLP-1 medications, employers have begun requiring nutritional counseling and coaching to combat how much employees spend on weight loss. It costs more to have diabetes, and weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound are no different.

Seeing the Value of Programs Like Virta Health

Before these medications went mainstream, Virta Health founder and CEO Sami Inkinen approached employers about using his company’s nutrition-oriented digital diabetes program to promote obesity-related weight loss. At the time, no one was interested, but employers sought Virta Health out when costs started to climb.

“Our goal is not to drive the maximum number of GLP-1 prescriptions,” Inkinen stated. “We are the telemedicine company of choice for many employers to responsibly use these drugs, and then also get members off of these drugs and sustain the weight loss nutritionally.”

A Promising Approach to Weight Loss

Virta Health’s nutritional approach was tested in a peer-reviewed study from 2024, and promising results were found. According to the study, patients who participated in Virta Health’s nutrition counseling programs could maintain weight loss one year after they stopped using GLP-1 medications.

Less than 10% of the company’s clients use medication, favoring nutritional counseling. Despite this, Virta Health helps them lose an average of 13% of their body weight within one year.

“Quite frankly,” Inkinen said, “despite the message that maybe the pharma companies are pushing, nobody really wants to be on these drugs forever, if you get the choice and the tools.”

    Rising Cost of Medication

A Business Group on Health survey stated that GLP-1 medications are a top driver of employer plan drug costs. Many employers consider this metric unsustainable and are turning to companies like Virta Health, which offers promising nutrition counseling and coaching services.

“Most employers want their plan members to have access to weight-management medication options, such as GLP-1s, however, they also want to ensure that it’s clinically appropriate and accompanied by the medical and lifestyle modification,” said the vice president of purchaser engagement with Purchaser Business Group on Health Randa Deaton. “[But] we’ve seen that PBMs and drug manufacturers have been reducing their rebates when employers are requiring a lifestyle management intervention as part of the drug criteria.”

    A Growing Business Model

Drug manufacturers are making it harder for employers to offer GLP-1 medication and require lifestyle intervention. They have to consider which is best for supporting workers and their families. Many of them feel that programs like Virta Health will have the most positive impact on their employees. As such, the GLP-1 growth dynamic has pushed the Virta Health startup far enough that it could go public this year—the company was valued at $2 billion in 2021.

A competitor to Virta Health, Omada Health, has also seen a significant increase in attention toward its weight loss management program. When the company partnered with Cigna, program enrollment spiked from 2 million in the second quarter of 2024 to 8 million in the third.

“The market continues to absorb the challenges of affordability [of GLP-1 drugs],” Cigna CEO David Cordani stated. “Clients are observing, and physicians are observing the start-and-stop dynamic that is transpiring for some patients, which also doesn’t generate the desired or intended outcome.”

    An Investment in Long-Term Health

The alternative approaches presented by Virta Health and Omada Health may help limit the indefinite use of GLP-1 medications among employees needing weight loss solutions. As costs for these drugs and other diabetes medications continue to rise, sustainable weight loss programs may be the right investment for employers looking to keep employees healthy for the long term.

Inkinen, for one, is confident in Virta Health’s offerings and the company’s continued growth. He concluded, “If you have a thing that’s working, it is 1,000 times easier to scale your thing, your team, your culture.”

  • Preserving the Oral Microbiome: A New Era of Smarter Oral Care

Preserving the Oral Microbiome: A New Era of Smarter Oral Care

In recent years, the oral microbiome has gained recognition as a critical component of overall health. This ecosystem of beneficial bacteria not only protects against harmful pathogens—it also supports essential functions such as digestion, immunity, and neurotransmitter production. Its importance transcends oral health: the microbiome plays a foundational role in maintaining systemic balance.

Despite this growing understanding, traditional oral care products tend to indiscriminately target bacteria. Over-sterilization and the use of harsh chemicals can disrupt the delicate balance of the microbiome. The effects of this imbalance? It can lead to long-term consequences such as inflammation, increased cavity risk, and weakened immune defenses. These challenges have prompted a reevaluation of oral care challenges. They’ve also emphasized the need for solutions that preserve the microbiome while addressing emerging health concerns.

The Shift in Oral Care Philosophy

For decades, the formula has been simple: oral sterilization equals health. Products designed to eliminate all bacteria—both harmful and beneficial—became the industry standard. These methods often achieved short-term results, but they came with an unintended consequence: they overlooked the long-term damage caused by microbiome disruption.

Today, the philosophy guiding oral care is shifting. Modern approaches focus on neutralizing bacterial toxins rather than simply eradicating all microbes. This strategy preserves the beneficial bacteria essential for maintaining a balanced microbiome.

The result? The promotion of both oral and systemic health. By addressing the root causes of oral health issues, these inventive practices offer sustainable solutions that align with the body’s natural ecosystem.

    Lumineux: Leading the Microbiome-Safe Revolution

Lumineux is the first Microbiome Safe® and certified non-toxic oral care brand—and it’s at the forefront of this revolution. Founded on the principle that the microbiome is vital to overall health, Lumineux offers products designed to preserve the natural balance of bacteria in the mouth—all while delivering effective results.

“Our focus is on neutralizing toxins while preserving the natural balance of bacteria in the mouth because the microbiome isn’t just important—it’s essential for overall health,” says Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, founder of Lumineux.

The brand avoids harsh chemicals by using natural ingredients such as Dead Sea salt, coconut oil, and sage oil to achieve exceptional results. Dead Sea salt is rich in minerals, so it neutralizes bacterial toxins while maintaining beneficial bacteria. As for coconut oil and sage oil? They provide whitening benefits and oral protection—without the sensitivity often caused by peroxide-based products.

This future-facing approach reflects Lumineux’s commitment to advancing oral care while safeguarding health.

Addressing Emerging Oral Health Care Concerns

The evolving landscape of oral health presents new challenges. One significant issue is the “dry mouth epidemic.” This is driven by medications that reduce saliva production. With more than 450 drugs linked to dry mouth, including many psychiatric medications, millions face heightened cavity risks and gum disease.

Modern diets and lifestyle trends have also contributed to increased tooth sensitivity and enamel damage. Popular whitening products use aggressive formulas that harm the microbiome, only making matters worse.

Dentists address these concerns with solutions like hydrating mouthwash. Hydrating mouthwash stimulates saliva production. This helps alleviate dry mouth—all while preserving the microbiome.

The Future of Oral Care Has Arrived

As oral care evolves, the focus is shifting toward performance-driven products that prioritize safety and effectiveness. Ongoing research is being performed at 70+ clinics and laboratories to reduce oral viral loads. Furthermore, researchers are determined to create solutions that prioritize health and performance.

Combining natural ingredients with microbiome-safe solutions creates effective, safe products that won’t cause sensitivity. This gives individuals the tools they need to adopt smarter oral care practices that enhance their health for years to come.

  • Franklin Fire in Malibu Grows to Nearly 3,900 After NWS Red Flag Warning

Franklin Fire in Malibu Grows to Nearly 3,900 After NWS Red Flag Warning

Malibu’s Franklin Fire has grown to nearly 3,900 acres following a red flag warning issued from Monday at 1:40 p.m. until 6 p.m. by the National Weather Service (NWS). This warning was and is specifically for the Eastern San Fernando Valley, the Southern Ventura County Mountains, the Northern Ventura County Mountains, the Interstate 5 Corridor, and Los Angeles.

“Due to the expected long duration of dangerous fire weather conditions and critically dry fuels,” the NWS states, “there is an increased risk for any new ignitions to have very rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior (including long range spotting). As a result, there is the increasing threat for fire weather conditions to rival other historical fires in recent times including the Mountain and Thomas Fires.”

    The Franklin Brush Fire

As of earlier today, the Franklin Brush Fire in Malibu, California, was first reported around 11 p.m. near Malibu Canyon Road. It was 10 acres in size and has grown to nearly 3,900 acres in total. Flames could be seen from the nearby Pepperdine University.

A combination of low humidity and Santa Ana winds created these dangerous fire conditions, which destroyed at least seven structures and caused damage to nine this morning. Currently, the fire is in 7% containment.

“Fire activity around Pepperdine’s Malibu campus has greatly diminished as the Franklin Fire has burned through most of the fuel immediately surrounding campus, but some flames are still visible in small pockets of campus,” the university said on its website.

    What Are Santa Ana Winds?

Santa Ana winds, also known as devil winds, were expected to increase significantly on Monday afternoon. These winds are known for their arid weather, affecting Southern and Northern Baja California. They originate from cool, dry, and high-pressure air masses in the Great Basin. They typically appear in the fall but can arise during other times of the year. Due to their low humidity, they are known to create critical fire weather conditions.

    Mandatory Evacuation Order

Los Angeles County fire officials have issued a mandatory evacuation order covering the area east of Malibu Canyon Road, south of Piuma Road, and the Serra Retreat area. This evacuation order area includes around 6,000 people and more than 2,000 structures.

    Evacuation Warning Areas

Fire officials have also issued evacuation warnings for the areas east of Trancas Canyon Road and Kanan Dune Road, west of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Surfview Drive, south of Mulholland Highway, and north of the Evacuation Order boundary, including Topanga Zone 8 and 10. The evacuation order warning area includes around 12,500 people and over 6,000 structures.

    Evacuation Centers

Evacuation centers for those without large animals include the Calabasas Community Center at 27040 Malibu Hills Road and the Santa Monica Unified School District Facility at 2802 4th Street. For those with large animals, evacuation centers include Pierce College at 6201 Winnetka Avenue, Woodland Hills, CA 91367, and the Agoura Animal Care Center in Agoura.

How to Prepare for a Red Flag Warning

If you are not in an evacuation zone, you can still prepare for potential fires. The NWS provides the following guidelines to help you minimize fire hazards and ensure safety during a red flag warning.

    • Burn Barrel Safety: If burning is permitted in your area, it is essential to ensure that all burn barrels have a weighted metal cover, including holes no larger than 3/4 of an inch.
    • Properly Dispose of Smoking Materials: Discard cigarettes and matches safely and never fling these from a moving vehicle or toss them outside. Even these can catch in dry grass, starting a wildfire.
    • Extinguish Outdoor Fires Deliberately: Whether a fire appears cool or not, it is essential to douse it with plenty of water, enough so that the kindling can be stirred to ensure complete cooling. Charcoal should be submerged and never left unattended while live.

Never Leave Fires Unattended: Small sparks and embers from a fire can catch into a wildfire if left unattended. Never abandon a fire without supervision.

  • It’s That Bad: Poor Air Conditions Blanket L.A.

It’s That Bad: Poor Air Conditions Blanket L.A.

Last week, Greater Los Angeles was issued a sweeping air quality alert. L.A.’s unique geography and persistent pollution sources created challenging air conditions through this past Friday at midnight. Announced last Wednesday, the alert comes as the basin’s natural bowl-like terrain traps pollutants in a stagnant air mass across many areas.

Sprawling from the coast to the valleys, the poor air conditions impacted the following regions: Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, the Santa Clarita Valley, Malibu Coast, Los Angeles proper, Palos Verdes Hills, the Western and Eastern Santa Monica Mountains Recreational areas, and the communities of Calabasas and Agoura Hills.

    Dangers in the Air

California endures some of the poorest air quality issues throughout the nation, mostly due to its high population density, high temperatures, frequent wildfires, and high human-caused emissions.

The terrible air quality in the Greater Los Angeles area is especially concerning given L.A.’s position in the American Lung Association’s 2024 State of the Air Report. This report ranked the Los Angeles-long Beach area among some of the country’s highest in ozone pollution. Ongoing emissions are a contributing factor to the region’s challenges; emission sources include vehicle exhaust, industrial activities, and port operations. Coupled with temperature inversions that prevent pollutant dispersion, the area is more prone to poorer air conditions.

“Particles in smoke can get deep into the lungs and cause health problems, including asthma attacks, increases in emergency room visits, and hospitalizations,” warned the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard, CA, which emphasized the air quality concerns were based on pollution levels forecasted for entire 24-hour periods.

    Steps You Can Take

With L.A. being prone to terrible air conditions, health officials recommend several precautionary steps you can take during such periods. These include:

    • Staying inside if possible, especially if you have respiratory issues, are elderly, or are a child.
    • Limiting your outdoor activities to essential tasks only when necessary.
    • Reduce the use of pollution-generating equipment, such as cars and gas-powered lawnmowers.
    • Keep windows and doors closed.
    • Running air conditioners and air purifiers when possible.
    • Avoid using devices that bring in outside air, such as swamp coolers or whole-house fans, if alternative cooling methods are available.

State Measures to Address Air Quality Issues

California has implemented several measures that address air quality issues, including introducing strict vehicle emissions standards and promoting clean energy alternatives. Last month, regulators approved changes to the low carbon fuel standard, which now requires gas stations to provide a more expensive but cleaner fuel blend.

While a persistent concern for California, more air quality alerts have been issued this year than during 2023. These alerts can be accompanied by varying calls to action depending on the specific concern. Some residents have been advised to avoid refueling their cars, being asked to avoid driving their cars, or to find carpool options instead.

Air quality alerts are more common in the summertime because of the impact that hotter weather has on the formation of ground-level ozone, which is a harmful pollutant.

Also part of Wednesday’s alert was the banning of residential wood burning, which included the non-desert portions of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties, as well as all of Orange County, according to the National Weather Service. Residents in these areas were reminded that burning wood in their fireplaces or any indoor/outdoor areas is prohibited, as well as burning manufactured fire logs, like those made from wax or paper. Exceptions to this alert included mountain communities above 3,000 feet, the Coachella Valley and the high desert, homes that rely on wood burning for heat, low-income households, and those without natural gas service.

The name SeaCliff Dental holds a sense of community and continuity. “We kept the name to ensure a smooth transition for our patients,” Dr. Cellars explains. His practice, much like its name, is rooted in trust and familiarity, while constantly evolving to meet the demands of modern dentistry.

At SeaCliff Dental, no two smiles are the same, and neither are the treatment plans. From routine cleanings to complex full-mouth reconstructions, Dr. Cellars and his team offer a wide range of services tailored to each patient’s needs. “We believe in personalized care,” he emphasizes. “This means understanding a patient’s lifestyle, budget, and priorities, and crafting a treatment plan that aligns with their unique goals.”

“Many dentists think there is one right treatment plan just by looking at the teeth but the patient’s individual needs must be taken into account based on what is most important to them at the time, whether it is saving money, pain, time commitment, etc.,” he adds.

    Comfort and Care

Dental anxiety is a common hurdle for many, but at SeaCliff Dental, the focus is on creating a stress-free experience. From offering amenities like headphones and blankets to providing sedation options, every effort is made to ensure patients feel at ease. “Comfort is key,” Dr. Cellars notes. “We put an emphasis on our patients’ comfort. We offer headphones, TVs, blankets, pillows, nitrous, sedation, and things like that. But we always try to find ways to go out of our way to make an experience better. Putting the patient’s comfort first and taking as much time as needed with each patient is what makes the biggest difference.”

    Giving Back

Giving back is an integral part of SeaCliff Dental’s mission. Dr. Cellars founded the Smile Foundation, a charity dedicated to raising funds for oral health education and providing comprehensive care to those in need. The foundation works closely with local women’s shelters, offering free reconstructive work that restores not just smiles, but confidence and hope.

“Our goal is to make a difference, both in our community and beyond,” Dr. Cellars says. “Sea Cliff Dental is involved with the Smile Foundation which is a charity that we started. It is a charity that raises funds for oral health education and comprehensive dental care for those in need. The practice organizes fundraising events and works with local women’s shelters to provide free reconstructive work, helping to restore confidence and improve the lives of those facing difficult circumstances.”

Mastering the Art of Oral Health

While Dr. Cellars is passionate about the transformative power of dentistry, he also emphasizes the importance of proper at-home care. “Flossing is often misunderstood,” he says, pointing out that many people see it as a quick fix rather than a crucial part of their routine. Proper technique involves rubbing both sides of each tooth, much like brushing, to remove plaque and prevent gum disease.

Another common mistake is relying solely on water. “It’s a great addition but not a replacement for flossing,” Dr. Cellars advises. Similarly, brushing immediately after eating can wear down your enamel due to the acidic buildup in your mouth. “Wait at least 15 minutes, or rinse with water first,” he suggests.

Perhaps one of the most overlooked habits is snacking and sipping throughout the day. “It keeps your mouth in an acidic state, which is harmful to your teeth,” Dr. Cellars warns. His advice? Enjoy your treats in one sitting to give your saliva a chance to neutralize the acids.

    The Future of Dentistry

As Dr. Cellars looks to the future, his goals are clear: to establish SeaCliff Dental as a premier cosmetic practice while maintaining excellence in all areas of dentistry. “I want my brand to be the best in the world,” he states confidently. His vision is one where patients leave not just with healthier teeth, but with a renewed sense of confidence.

“I really want my brand to be the best in the world. I want the patient’s experience to be amazing,” he says.

For Dr. Cellars, the joy of dentistry lies in the perfect blend of technical precision and human connection. “I love studying dentistry and trying to perfect my craft,” he says. “But what truly excites me is seeing the impact on my patients’ lives.”

As he continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in dental care, one thing is certain: Dr. Jason Cellars is not just shaping smiles—he’s shaping lives, one patient at a time.

In the ever-evolving landscape of health and wellness, West Hollywood stands out as a hub of innovation and trendsetting fitness concepts. Amidst this vibrant scene, Evoken Wellness Studio has carved out its own niche, offering a transformative approach that goes beyond the physical. As the studio celebrates its one-year anniversary this month, founder Janina Washington reflects on an incredible journey of growth, perseverance, and community building.

“I launched Evoken because Pilates changed my life—it transformed my body and mindset, and I wanted to create a space where others could have that same experience,” Janina shared. Raised in the UK, Janina relocated to Los Angeles in 2010 to continue her already flourishing modeling and acting career. Impressively, she juggled her busy schedule to open and operate Evoken, creating a studio that redefines what a wellness space can be. “The studio is designed to be a sanctuary where you can connect with your breath, relax, and feel challenged but never defeated. It’s about mind-body connection and creating a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.”

Located at 1105 N. Hayworth Ave, Evoken’s elegant and intimate space is designed to be more than just a place to work out, it’s a place to unwind. Classes include pilates, yoga, and sound bath meditations, and more recently, the addition of the new wellness suite. Offering advanced recovery services such as contrast therapy, infrared saunas, and cold plunge baths, with the addition of the private wellness suite, Evoken is a one-stop destination that caters to the holistic needs of its clients, combining fitness with elements of relaxation and mental wellness.

Evoken’s success can be attributed to its holistic approach, something Janina is particularly proud of. “We don’t just focus on fitness; we focus on creating an entire experience,” she explained. “From the moment you walk in, the energy is different—it’s warm, welcoming, and uplifting. We always have a beautiful aroma and thoughtfully curated playlists.” Clients have responded enthusiastically to this unique blend of physical and mental wellness, as evidenced by the studio’s staggering achievement of over 11,000 five-star reviews in its first year.

This rapid success has spurred interest from around the world. “We’ve received requests from clients to expand to cities like New York, London, and even Mexico City,” Janina revealed. Such demand has influenced Evoken’s long-term strategy as the studio looks to extend its footprint beyond Los Angeles. “Knowing there’s such demand in these hotspots has influenced our long-term plans for expansion.”

As Evoken enters its second year, Janina and her team are focused on expanding their services to include offerings such as lymphatic drainage massages, IV treatments, and launching exclusive wellness retreats. “We’re excited to introduce more wellness-focused services,” Janina shared. “Having just launched our new wellness suite, it’s an incredible addition for those looking to incorporate recovery into their routine.”

Despite its impressive growth, Evoken’s journey hasn’t been easy . “The first year wasn’t without challenges,” Janina admitted. “Coming from a background of financial hardship, I had to rely on personal loans from friends. There were days where I wore ten different hats, handling everything from customer service to event planning. But the support of my team, our amazing instructors, and my partner made it all worthwhile. It truly does take a village.” The experience has taught Janina the importance of resilience and adaptability, qualities that have become the backbone of Evoken’s brand identity.

The studio’s one-year anniversary celebration on October 5th was a testament to this sense of community. The exclusive VIP event featured live music by DJ Tess, a cocktail and mocktail bar, tarot readings, and raffle prizes. Specialty gift bags, curated through exclusive brand collaborations with Link x Lou, Four Sigmatic, Koa Life, BOMANI, Nialaya, Zero Proof, and more, added a touch of luxury to the evening. Red Carpet arrivals kicked off the event, setting the tone for a memorable night of celebration and connection.

“Our first year has been an incredible journey,” Janina shared. “Seeing the impact we’ve made over the past year and hearing the heartfelt feedback from our clients has been the ultimate success. We’ve built a strong community, and I’m beyond grateful for the support and enthusiasm of our clients and partners.”

As Evoken moves forward, Janina’s vision remains clear: to continue building a wellness space that nurtures both body and mind, while expanding its influence to new locations. With her focus on innovation, community, and holistic health, Janina Washington is poised to become a leader in the wellness industry as Evoken’s growing success has proven… she’s setting new standards for what a fitness studio experience can be.

Dr. Jason Cellars’ journey into dentistry was fueled by a desire to make a real difference in people’s lives through meticulous, compassionate care. From the beginning, his mission has been clear: to create a dental practice that not only provides top-notch clinical care but also fosters a welcoming, supportive environment for every patient. At SeaCliff Dental, this vision has become a reality. The practice has quickly become synonymous with excellence, offering a comprehensive range of services that cater to the diverse needs of patients. “Whatever you need, this is the first place to go,” says Dr. Cellars, confident in the practice’s ability to address all dental concerns, from routine checkups to specialized treatments.

One of the hallmarks of SeaCliff Dental is its unwavering commitment to patient comfort, particularly for those who experience dental anxiety. Dr. Cellars and his team go above and beyond to create a welcoming environment where patients feel at ease. “We offer headphones, TV, blankets, pillows, nitrous sedation—things like that,” he explains, highlighting the importance of a personalized approach to care. “Putting the patient’s comfort first and taking as much time as needed with each patient is what makes the biggest difference.” This focus on comfort and individualized care has made SeaCliff Dental a trusted name in the community, particularly among patients who have previously struggled with fear or discomfort during dental visits.

The practice’s approach to patient care is rooted in a deep understanding of the fears and anxieties that many people associate with dental visits. Dr. Cellars believes that by creating a comfortable and reassuring environment, patients are more likely to have positive experiences that encourage them to maintain their oral health. “We always try to find ways to go out of our way to make an experience better,” he says, emphasizing the importance of empathy and understanding in his approach to patient care. This philosophy not only helps to alleviate patient anxiety but also fosters long-term relationships built on trust and mutual respect.

The practice’s dedication to patient well-being extends beyond the clinic walls. Dr. Cellars is deeply involved in promoting oral health awareness through the Smile Foundation, a charity he founded to provide education and comprehensive dental care to those in need. “We currently host two to three fundraisers a year,” he shares, emphasizing the importance of giving back to the community and helping those facing difficult circumstances. Through these initiatives, SeaCliff Dental not only improves the oral health of its patients but also makes a positive impact on the broader community. The Smile Foundation works tirelessly to ensure that even those without access to regular dental care can receive the treatments they need to maintain a healthy smile.

For Dr. Cellars, dentistry is not just a profession—it’s a calling. His work is a testament to the belief that true success in healthcare comes from a blend of expertise and genuine compassion, a combination that has made SeaCliff Dental a beacon of hope and healing in the community.

  • Spicy Dance Fitness Studio Madhouse Dance Opens Second Location in San Diego County

Spicy Dance Fitness Studio Madhouse Dance Opens Second Location in San Diego County

Madhouse Dance has launched a second location in Encinitas, spearheaded by founder Olivia Kingston. Madhouse has become a popular new fitness movement throughout San Diego County with its unique take on dance fitness. Increasingly, more people are looking to exercise in new, engaging ways that center around community. With the evident popularity of dance shows and TikTok dances, more people are looking for dance classes than ever before. Madhouse meets those demands by providing fun, empowering, and “spicy” dance classes for women, no matter their dance background.

“I wanted to provide a safe and exciting outlet for people to let loose and dance without going to a bar or a club,” founder Olivia Kingston says. “Madhouse is all the fun of the club, without the booze and unwanted attention.”  While you might not be at the club, the studio emulates an electric nightclub environment by turning the lights down and the music up.

Madhouse grew a near-cult following and passionate support after launching their original Redroom Dance Cardio class in 2021. Redroom is a rated R, extra spicy version of their dance HIIT-style workout class featuring explicit music, booty shaking, floorwork, and unapologetic body love. Kingston wanted to give women, including herself, a safe and nonjudgmental outlet to tap into their sensual feminine energy while getting a great workout. While the content of the class might be shocking at first to some, it always ignites a source of self-love, self-acceptance, and empowerment that remains untapped in many women.

The strangest thing about Kingston as a dance studio owner? She’s actually not a trained dancer. She doesn’t have the decades of dance experience that normally decorate the resumes of studio owners. To her, that’s a distinct advantage. “I believe that one of the reasons that Madhouse resonates so deeply with the community is that it is specifically designed for people who don’t consider themselves dancers — people who like to dance, but are unlikely to attend studios focused on serious trained dancers. I know what it feels like to be intimidated, nervous, or left behind in a studio setting. I know that all I cared about 4 years ago was having a fun dance workout, not technique or performance.”

This is indeed what makes her take on a dance studio particularly compelling and brings in people with little to no dance experience. She continues, “I’m hyper conscious of what my target demographic is looking for because I relate to them so heavily. I do everything I can to make the experience fun and welcoming for them.”

If you want to experience the Madhouse movement yourself, you can book a class at one of their two San Diego locations: Morena Blvd. or Encinitas. And don’t worry! If you’re not in San Diego but want to experience a class, they have an online class platform with new episodes added weekly.
