Smokey Robinson Accused of Multiple Sexual Assaults

Four women have recently come forward and accused singer and producer Smokey Robinson of sexually harassing and repeatedly assaulting them while they worked as housekeepers for the Motown icon and his wife at various times going back to 2007.

“We’re seeking damages of $50 million. Obviously, no amount of money can compensate these women for what Mr. Robinson subjected them to, but given the gravity of Mr. Robinson’s despicable and reprehensible misconduct, that is further detailed in the complaint, this amount is clearly warranted,” lawyer John W. Harris said at a press conference attended by the women Tuesday.

    The Lawsuit

According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe 1, alleges Robinson sexually battered her at least seven times between January 2023 and February 2024. She claims Robinson would take his wife out, rush home, and then lure her into his “blue bedroom,” where he would lock the door and place a white towel on his bed so he wouldn’t “soil the bed lines.” The woman alleges Robinson ignored her resistance to his advances and would “roughly penetrate” her. “She quit in February 2024 because she could no longer endure these sexual assaults,” Harris said.

Jane Doe 2 alleges she worked for Robinson and his wife between May 2014 and February 2020. She claims Robinson forced her into unwanted sexual acts on at least 23 occasions. She says Robinson would force her to perform oral sex on him before he penetrated her without using a condom. She claims he “enjoyed ejaculating all over [her] face, much to his satisfaction and her abject humiliation.”

Jane Doe 3 alleges Robinson “repeatedly sexually harassed, sexually assaulted… [her] during most of her entire employment” between February 2012 and April 2024, according to the official complaint.

Jane Doe 4 reports that she began her employment with Robinson and his wife in 2006, but was compelled to resign in April 2024 because of alleged abuse. She asserts that Robinson initially sexually assaulted her in 2007 during a visit to his Las Vegas residence.

“He would pull [Jane Doe 4’s] clothes off, and against her protestations, push her down on the bed” and proceed to assault her, the 27-page lawsuit obtained by Rolling Stone states. “Defendant Smokey Robinson never used a condom during the sexual assaults, ejaculating into [her] vagina or withdrawing and ejaculating all over her body, much to his satisfaction and her abject humiliation.”

    Bringing the Charges to Light

Three of the Jane Does indicated that they hesitated to report the alleged abuse due to fear of job loss and potential negative consequences for their immigration status. The lawsuit claims they felt “intimidated” by Robinson’s “well-recognized celebrity status and his influential friends and associates.”

According to the complaint, Robinson’s wife, Frances, “failed to take the appropriate corrective action to prevent defendant Smokey Robinson’s deviant misconduct,” despite allegedly “having full knowledge of his prior acts of sexual misconduct, having settled cases with other women that suffered and experienced similar sexual assaults perpetuated by him.”

Kristen Stewart, 35, and Dylan Meyer, 37, are officially married. The actor and screenwriter exchanged vows on April 20th in a small ceremony held at the iconic Mexican restaurant Casita del Campo in Los Feliz, California. The nuptials took place after a four-year engagement.

    A Private Ceremony

The wedding occurred on a Sunday, just days after the couple obtained their marriage license at the Los Angeles courthouse. Stewart, best known for her role in the Twilight series, wore a matching gray skirt and blouse paired with a white crop top. Meyer, who penned scripts for XOXO and Moxie, opted for a sheer white blouse and a beige satin skirt. She completed her look with a ponytail tied with a black ribbon.

The ceremony took place in front of 170 guests, including actor Ashley Benson and her husband, Brandon Jack James, Nicholas Meyer (Stewart’s dad), and Phil Meynell, the co-owner of The Mulberry bar in New York City. The casual, close-knit wedding was just what Stewart always envisioned.

    A No-Fuss Wedding

In 2022, Stewart appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, hinting at an upcoming wedding and describing the vibe she desired for the ceremony.

“I want to have a big party or something,” Stewart said. “I think we might do it this weekend or something, and then hang out with everyone afterward. I just want to do it.”

The Oscar nominee got what she expected. She and Meyer enjoyed a low-key celebration at their favorite Mexican eatery. They tied the knot while surrounded by a small group of close friends and family.

In 2022, Meyer and Stewart hit a milestone in their relationship. For the first time, they appeared on the red carpet at the Academy Awards. At that time, the latter received a nomination for her role as Princess Diana in the movie Spencer.

    From Coworkers to Partners

Stewart and Meyer first met in 2013 on the set of a film project. However, they didn’t begin dating until six years later. Their romantic connection reportedly began after reconnecting at a friend’s birthday party in 2019. Soon after, the couple was spotted together in public, holding hands and appearing cozy.

Their relationship became official on Instagram in October 2019. Meyer posted a black-and-white photo booth picture of the two sharing a kiss. She captioned, “Find me under the covers hiding from the happiness police.”

    Love in Her Own Words

Stewart has been candid about her relationship with Meyer in past interviews. During a 2019 appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Stewart recalled the first time she told Meyer she loved her.

“The first time I told her I love her, it was late, and we were in some bar, and her friends were there or whatever, and they walked out, and I was just like: ‘Oh, man, I’m so in love with you.’ Like, done,” she said. “It wasn’t like ‘a thing,’ and it was so obvious.”

Two years later, she returned to Stern’s show to share that she and Meyer were engaged. “We’re marrying, it’s happening,” she said.

    Life Beyond Wedded Bliss

Aside from tying the knot, the newlyweds plan to start a family. In the meantime, the couple has also cemented their professional partnership. Last year, they launched their production company, Nevermind Pictures.

  • Bernie Sanders Delivers Justice-Focused Message During Coachella Appearance

Bernie Sanders Delivers Justice-Focused Message During Coachella Appearance

On April 12, the Coachella music festival in Indio, California, unexpectedly welcomed Senator Bernie Sanders on its grand stage. The 83-year-old Vermont senator, now the longest-serving independent member of Congress, cited young people’s commitment to work toward their country’s better future.

“The future of what happens to America is dependent upon your generation,” Sanders told the crowd. He emphasized the stakes of political apathy, stating, “Now you can turn away and you can ignore what goes on, but if you do that, you do it at your own peril.”

A Call for Justice and Action

In his short remarks, Sanders urged those present to stand up for “economic justice, social justice, and racial justice.”

His appearance did not fall within the lineup for the official festival. Instead, it reportedly caught many in the audience by surprise. Still, the message was in keeping with his decades-long advocacy for progressive causes and grassroots engagement.

“We need you to stand up to fight for justice,” Sanders said, rallying the crowd with his familiar tone of urgency and conviction.

    Link to ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ Tour

The Coachella gig came after Sanders’ rally in Los Angeles that day. The rally was part of a national “Fighting Oligarchy” tour with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. Sanders’s spokesperson posted earlier on X (formerly Twitter) that the LA rally attracted 36,000 people, his largest turnout thus far on this tour.

The tour’s recent events, which have been to many cities in recent weeks, continue to draw significant crowds despite the increased opposition to the Trump administration and the growing momentum among the Democratic Party’s progressive activists.

Reaction to Trump’s Mention Met With Boos

The audience at the music festival loudly reacted to Sanders’s mention of former President Donald Trump. There were loud boos in the crowd, and Sanders responded simply with an “I agree.” He said nothing further in support of this remark.

It reminds us that Sanders has constantly been outspoken against Trumpian policies and has carried on his battle to inspire younger voters on progressive issues.

Gen Z Introduction and Closing Remarks

Rep. Maxwell Frost, a Florida Democrat and the first Gen Z member of Congress, introduced Sanders on stage. It was a powerful metaphorical passing of the torch between generations, which points out the event’s theme: promoting youth engagement and political accountability.

Following the appearance, Sanders posted on X saying, “Thank you, Coachella,” noting that he had enjoyed introducing the musician Clairo. He reiterated his core message: “The younger generation has to help lead in the fight to combat climate change, protect women’s rights, and build an economy that works for all, not just the few.”

A Continued Voice for Progressive Change

Although he is no longer a presidential candidate, Sanders remains one of the most significant voices of the progressive movement in the Senate. He was re-elected in November for a fourth term and still helps shape national conversations on inequality, climate change, and justice reform.

Although his Coachella appearance may have lasted only a few moments, his message echoed his broader mission: to empower a new generation to take charge of the country’s direction.

  • Magic Farm, Starring Chloe Sevigny, to Open Los Angeles Festival of Movies

Amalia Ulman’s Magic Farm debuts as the opening night screening of the second edition of the Los Angeles Festival of Movies. Presented by MUBI and Mezzanine, LAFM will be held from April 3-6, 2025, and will feature more than 20 feature films, a curated shorts roster, an inaugural animation program, and featured artist talks.

Ullman’s sophomore film is laced with the sardonic humor the filmmaker is known for. The musical score also demonstrates her sense of humor, as the film follows an inept film crew pursuing a celebrated Latin American singer in the wrong country.

Magic Farm, a MUBI film that had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, will kick the event off at Vidots’ Eagle Theatre on April 3. The independent film was written and directed by Ulman and stars Chloē Sevigny, Simon Rex, and Alex Wolff. Critics have enjoyed the movie, calling it hilarious and charming with a vibrant visual style. Sheri Linden with The Hollywood Reporter states, “Magic Farm features a stupendous cast fully in sync with Ulman’s deadpan absurdity.”

    Magic Farm

The film tells the story of a film crew working for an edgy media company who travels to Argentina to profile a local musician, though they are in the wrong country. As the crew works with locals to form a new trend, unexpected connections blossom while a pre-determined medical crisis looms.

The acerbic comedy highlights the American film crew’s ineptitude and their Argentine counterparts’ resourcefulness. Cumbia music is present throughout the film, adding nuance to each scene that follows the film crew who travel the world in hopes of exploiting offbeat international stories for sensationalized content.

Their new quest finds them chasing the elusive Super Carlitos, a whimsical singer known for wearing bunny ears, residing in San Cristobal. The inept crew travels to the wrong Latin American country and is forced to team up with locals to pursue their target through Argentina. The film follows the sardonic and dry humor from Ullman’s first film, El Planeta. The sophomore film has received warm reviews for Ullman and her work and debuts at LAFM.

    LAFM

LAFM again partners with Vidiots in Eagle Rock, interdisciplinary space 2220 Arts+ Archives in Historic Filipinotown, and independent theater Now Instant Image Hall in Chinatown as screening venues. The lecture series will be held at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Feliz.

Founders Micah Gottlieb and Sarah Winshall collectively said, “After a devastating start to the year for Los Angeles, we feel more inspired than ever about bringing our community together to watch, discuss, and celebrate great movies.”

The founders continued, “We’re thrilled to host a variety of incredibly stirring and original films from some of the finest emerging international filmmakers, multidisciplinary artists, and top talents. It’s our pleasure to provide a holistic view of independent cinema today.”

    LAFM’s Lineup

Along with Magic Farm, the festival includes Dennis Cooper and Zac Farley’s Room Temperature, Alexandra Simplson’s No Sleep Till, Grace Glowicki’s Dead Lover, Virgil Vernier’s Cent Mille Milliards, Julian Castronovo’s Debut, Or, Objects of the Field of Debris as Currently Catalogued, Courtney Stephens’ Intervention, and Charlie Shackleton’s Zodiac Killer Report.

According to the festival’s description, Cooper will participate in an artist talk with Tony Tulathimuttle to “discuss their respective approaches and inspirations in creating aberrant and transgressive depictions of obsession and desire in cinema and literature. ”

    Animation Today

Cartuna presents Animation Today, and the lineup hosts Yoriko Mizushiri’s An Ordinary Life, Jan Sasaka’s Hurikán, Lucas Malbrun’s Margarethe ’89, Jean-Baptiste Peltier and Erika Haglund’s Mont Noir, John Kelly’s Retirement Plan, and Samuel Patthey’s Sans Voix.

Fans of Netflix’s series, “Stranger Things,” are in for a treat as showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer revealed tantalizing details about the much-anticipated fifth season at the Next on Netflix event. Though new trailers or photos were absent, behind-the-scenes footage hinted at an ambitious, large-scale production that promises to deliver what Ross and Matt described as “eight blockbuster movies.”

The brothers emphasized the emotional weight of this final season. “It’s our most personal story,” Matt shared, recounting the intense year-long production throughout 2024. “There was a lot of crying. There was SO much crying. Everyone put their hearts and souls into it.” The duo revealed they had captured over 650 hours of footage, reflecting on this as their most ambitious season yet.

    New Faces and Familiar Places

At the event, fans caught glimpses of Linda Hamilton donning a military uniform, promising a formidable presence in the upcoming season. The stakes appear higher than ever, with expansive sets and intricate designs, notably the stunning radio set that suggests major plot developments.

Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, introduced the behind-the-scenes sizzle reel alongside the Duffer brothers, highlighting their decade-long partnership with the streaming giant. The showrunners reflected on their journey, expressing gratitude and excitement for what’s to come.

Future of the Stranger Things Universe

As for the fate of “Stranger Things” beyond Season 5, the Duffers hinted that while the journey for beloved characters like Mike, Hopper, Dustin, Lucas, and Eleven might be concluding, it’s far from the end of the series. Matt stated, “It’s very important to us that anything with the Stranger Things name on it is of the highest quality… It needs to basically just be… awesome.”

Excitingly, a Stranger Things West End show is set to hit Broadway soon, and an animated series, codenamed Project Mirkwood, has already secured a two-season commitment. Fans can rest assured that any future spin-offs will maintain the high standard the series is known for.

New Ventures with Upside Down Pictures

Beyond the world of Hawkins, the Duffer brothers are also expanding their creative footprint through their production company, Upside Down Pictures. Two new projects are slated for release on Netflix in 2026.

“The Boroughs,” a sci-fi series co-run by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, features a stellar cast, including Geena Davis, Jena Malone, Bill Pullman, and Alfred Molina. Ross described it as a thrilling tale of a group of misfits battling an otherworldly evil, intriguingly set in a retirement community. Ross revealed, “It’s about a group of misfits who fight an otherworldly evil… Only this time, it’s set in a retirement community. It’s fun, scary, and touching, too, and we can’t wait for you to see it,” he added.

Another project, intriguingly titled “Something Very Bad is Going to Happen,” recently entered production. Ross described the project by saying, “It follows a bride and groom in a chaotic, anxiety-filled week leading up to their wedding.” He also remarked, “The title is accurate. Bad things do happen.” Both the projects did have first-look pictures shown on the stage, but they haven’t been released to the public yet.

    Release Dates and What’s Next

Unfortunately, a specific release date for “Stranger Things” Season 5 wasn’t confirmed during the event. However, information from other sources reveals a split release between October and November 2025, potentially aligning with Thanksgiving. More updates are expected at Netflix’s TUDUM event in Los Angeles this May.

As the curtain prepares to fall on one of Netflix’s most iconic series, the Duffer brothers continue to captivate audiences with their ambitious storytelling and new ventures. Fans are eagerly awaiting what promises to be an unforgettable conclusion to the “Stranger Things” saga.

  • Oscars Shares Ceremony Changes, Including Honor for L.A. Amid Wildfires

Oscars Shares Ceremony Changes, Including Honor for L.A. Amid Wildfires

The Oscars recently shared details on this year’s ceremony, including breaks from tradition and recognition of Los Angeles as the city grapples with the damage caused by wildfires. The 97th Oscars ceremony is set to take place on Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby® Theatre of Ovation Hollywood. It will be televised live on ABC at 7 p.m. ET and streamed live on Hulu and Disney+, as well as the Academy’s social media platforms.

A Commitment to Acknowledge Los Angeles and the Film Industry

Oscars CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang made an announcement detailing how the organization was committed to acknowledging the resilience of the film industry and its central city of Los Angeles. Though the fires continue to burn as of writing, causing the Oscars to extend the voting period, rainfall has brought some relief to the city.

“We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community,” Kramer and Yang said. “The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship.”

“Our members always share how important it is for us to come together as a community,” Kramer and Yang continued, “and we are determined to use this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compassionate industry. We also look forward to honoring our frontline workers who have aided with the fires, recognizing those impacted, and encouraging people to join the Academy in supporting the relief efforts.”

Changes Due to the Los Angeles Wildfires

The Oscars nominations voting period was extended through Friday, January 17, and nominations were announced on Thursday, January 23. Notably, the Oscars Nominees Luncheon, previously scheduled for Monday, February 10, will not be held this year. The Scientific and Technical Awards, previously scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, will be rescheduled to a later date.

    Hosted by Conan O’Brien

This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Emmy-winning comedian and former late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien. His approach will reportedly focus on the spirit of connection and collaboration inherent in the filmmaking industry.

Changes to the Original Song Category’s Presentation

Notably, the Oscars is making a significant change to how the original song category is presented this year. The category will not feature live performances of nominated songs, but rather the show will focus on personal reflections and insights from the songwriters and creatives behind the music.

This year’s nominees include “Like a Bird” from Sing Sing, “Never Too Late” from Elton John: Never Too Late, “The Journey” from The Six Triple Eight, as well as “El Mal” and “Mi Camino” from Emilia Pérez.

“We will celebrate their artistry through personal reflections from the teams who bring these songs to life,” Kramer and Yang wrote in a letter to Academy members. “All of this, and more, will uncover the stories and inspiration behind this year’s nominees.

The Return of “Fab 5” Moments

It is unclear whether this change to the Oscars tradition will be a permanent one, or if the Academy’s leadership thought it would be meaningful for this event in particular. What will return this year are the “Fab 5” moments, a segment where the Oscars invite individual artists to recognize nominees and perform tributes. This tradition was introduced relatively recently but has had an impact on audiences as a way to celebrate artistry across generations.

“There is so much more in store,” Kramer and Yang’s letter concluded, “including powerful musical moments that connect film’s rich history to its bold and inspiring future. We hope you will tune in tomorrow morning to watch the Nominations Announcement, and we greatly appreciate your ongoing commitment to the Academy and our film community. We are stronger together.”

  • Police Raid Casper Smart, J.Lo’s Ex, for Alleged Marijuana Grow Operation

Police Raid Casper Smart, J.Lo’s Ex, for Alleged Marijuana Grow Operation

As the festive season approached, Casper Smart, actor, choreographer, and former boyfriend of pop icon Jennifer Lopez, was embroiled in legal trouble. Just two days before Christmas, police raided Smart’s Los Angeles home following a tip about an alleged cannabis grow operation. The incident unfolded early on December 23, disrupting what should have been a celebratory time of year.

Smart first rose to fame through his high-profile relationship with Lopez and his work in the entertainment industry. He is now facing scrutiny for allegations surrounding the raid. The search has brought renewed attention to his personal life. It raises questions about how the news might impact his career and public image.

The incident also highlights a broader issue: cannabis legalization and the fine line between its personal use and illegal cultivation. California is known for its progressive marijuana laws, but the state still imposes strict regulations on cultivation without proper licensing. For Smart, the raid was not just a legal matter—it was a moment that could define the next chapter of his life.

    The Raid and Its Findings

According to TMZ, police executed a search warrant at Smart’s Los Angeles residence at approximately 9 a.m. on December 23. Authorities were acting on a tip about illegal activity. When officers arrived, Smart was at home with an unidentified woman.

During the search, police uncovered an active marijuana grow operation. They described what they saw as small to medium in size. While the discovery raised concerns, officers did not detain Smart. Instead, they cited and released him at the scene.

The case has since been forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review. Prosecutors will determine whether to file charges. As of now, neither Smart nor his representatives have addressed the incident publicly.

A Complex Past with the Spotlight

The recent raid is not the first time Smart’s personal life has made headlines. Much of his public profile has been shaped by his relationship with Jennifer Lopez. The pair started dating in 2011, shortly after Lopez divorced Marc Anthony. The couple’s on-again, off-again romance lasted five years, capturing significant media attention.

In 2014, the couple’s relationship faced strain when rumors surfaced that Smart had been “sexting transsexual” models. These allegations created a wave of negative press just as Lopez was gearing up for a major performance in her Bronx hometown.

“She’s coming back to The Bronx, and the only thing anyone can talk about is her toyboy and the transsexuals,” a source told Page Six at the time. Another insider noted, “Jennifer is getting tired of all these allegations. She doesn’t need this drama and is ready to move on.”

By 2016, the pair had officially called it quits, reportedly due to Smart’s alleged infidelities.

    Potential Legal and Career Consequences

The cannabis grow operation discovered at Smart’s home underscores the ongoing complexities of California’s marijuana laws. While the state has legalized recreational use and personalized cultivation, strict guidelines govern the amount individuals can grow without a license. Violating these regulations can lead to significant legal repercussions—even in a state with a progressive stance on cannabis.

Should the District Attorney’s Office decide to pursue charges, Smart may face fines or more severe penalties depending on the circumstances of the grow operation. The legal proceedings could also impact his reputation within the entertainment industry, where public image plays a crucial role.

    The Road Ahead

For now, Casper Smart’s future remains uncertain. With the case in legal limbo, he must contend with both public scrutiny and potential legal fallout. While his name has often been associated with high-profile relationships and creative endeavors, this latest development has placed Smart in an entirely different kind of spotlight.

  • OpenAI Releases Sora to the Public, Shocking Hollywood

OpenAI Releases Sora to the Public, Shocking Hollywood

In a move that has shocked Tinsel Town, OpenAI has released Sora, its buzzy generative AI tool capable of creating hyper-realist videos for the public. Upon issuing a post on Monday, OpenAI said that the text-to-video generator is available for public use. While an account must be made to use Sora and sign-ups have been temporarily disabled due to heavy traffic, this software launch has the potential to single-handedly and drastically accelerate Hollywood’s incorporation of AI.

Over the past several years, the entertainment industry has been actively grappling with how to implement AI into its business models. On the one hand, the deployment of the technology has the potential to significantly slash production costs. On the other hand, there has been vehement backlash from audiences and creators alike regarding studios utilizing AI to replace human creatives.

    AI in Hollywood

Despite this, mainstream adoption in Hollywood has been slow but steady. In September, Lionsgate announced a partnership with Runway in a deal to see the New York-based AI startup train a new generative AI model on company content.

Shortly after that, some of the directors of the most successful blockbuster films of all time, the Russo Brothers and James Cameron joined the board of directors of AI companies. Many in Hollywood watch These video-focused models closely, particularly in the visual effects industry, where AI has been pitched as a one-size-fits-all solution to many pipeline problems developed over the last decade.

As the quantity of blockbuster television shows and films has increased, more pressure has been placed on visual effects houses to crank out better, faster work at an insane pace. This has resulted in workers being unfairly compensated, “crunched,” and ultimately doing work that isn’t as high-quality as it could be. AI seeks to answer these dilemmas, eliminating human workers despite pleas from everyone in the VFX community to the contrary.

According to the post, Sora’s Capabilities, videos up to 1080p resolution and 20 seconds long can be created in widescreen, vertical, or square aspect ratios. Users can upload their assets to extend, remix, and blend videos, generating new content with a text prompt.

Last month, OpenAI said that ChatGPT now has more than 200 million active users weekly. It plans to introduce ChatGPT Pro, a new $200 monthly subscription tier with unlimited access to OpenAI o1, GPT-4o, and Advanced Voice mode. It’ll continue to offer a Plus tier for $20 per month, which includes early access to new features.

Sora was initially limited to a pool of safety testers, who reported on vulnerabilities related to misinformation and bias, and visual artists, designers, and filmmakers, who gave feedback on improvements. In November, a small group of artists testing Sora leaked access to the tool to protest the company’s treatment of them as “free bug testers” and “PR puppets.”

In an open letter, they stated, “Hundreds of artists provide unpaid labor through bug testing, feedback and experimental work for the program for a $150B valued company.”

    Will It Change Hollywood?

A study issued earlier this year surveying 300 leaders across Hollywood reported that three-fourths of respondents indicated that AI tools supported eliminating, reducing, or consolidating jobs at their companies. Over the next three years, nearly 204,000 positions will be adversely affected. Sound engineers, voice actors, concept artists, and workers in visual effects were cited as particularly vulnerable.

OpenAI no longer discloses the sources of data used to train its systems. Artists, authors, and publications have sued the Sam Altman-led company over allegations that it illegally pilfered their work without consent and compensation. Courts ruling against fair use—a legal doctrine that allows the use of copyrighted works without a—could have significant implications for AI leaders.

  • New Hollywood Heartthrob Nico Hiraga, Never Leaving His SF Roots

New Hollywood Heartthrob Nico Hiraga, Never Leaving His SF Roots

Nico Hiraga, the star of the new Max romantic comedy movie Sweethearts, puffs with pride hearing his beloved hometown’s name. With his heart in San Francisco, the actor and skateboard enthusiast declared, “Loud and proud. I was born and raised in San Francisco. That’s my home. My city.”

The 26-year-old, who celebrates his 27th birthday on December 19, spent his youth launching himself in skate parks across the city, particularly at Golden Gate Park. At 14, this skater boy got a sponsorship, officially setting out on his journey to become a pro skater.

“I had tunnel vision towards skateboarding,” he says. “I did it so much that I thought it was all I was ever going to do.”

Unfortunately, when Hiraga was 19 years old, he suffered a big injury that pushed away his dreams of becoming a professional skateboarder. As he started to recover, he decided to give acting a try, and in the years since—thanks to roles in films such as Moxie, Booksmart, and Love in Taipei—he quickly became one of Hollywood’s most promising young actors. And quite the heartthrob, too.

    A Near Miss on “Sweethearts”

With a calendar that was full of auditions and scripts piling up at a time when Hiraga “was enjoying skating a little too much,” Sweethearts was a script that was set to the side. Hiraga shared, “I remember thinking, ‘I’ll skip this one,’” but with his reps reminding him to give the script a read, he gave it a try. Reading through the script, the actor immediately saw the potential. “Instantly, I was like, ‘This is good, dude. This could be a sick one.’”

Hiraga was attracted to Sweethearts because he was finally getting the opportunity to appear in an R-rated, raunchy comedy. “I’d been playing more high school-age rom-coms. So reading this script, it was very different,” he says. “I thought it was creative, hilarious, and cool.”

Sweethearts features Hiraga opposite Kiernan Shipka, most well known for her role as Don Draper’s drink-making daughter in Mad Men. As first-year college students who have been best friends since the eighth grade, Ben (Hiraga) and Jamie (Shipka) plan to end their long-distance relationships with their high school sweethearts over Thanksgiving break. This leads to a wild night out in their hometown that puts their friendship to the test.

Reflecting on almost missing out on Sweethearts, Hiraga called the experience “life-changing” and “super dope.” The actor said, “It’s about friendships and, even as you get older and things change, keeping close to the people you grew up with.”

A Different Life But The Same Roots

While the Hollywood heartthrob is climbing the Hollywood ladder, Hiraga still skateboards to stay close to his childhood friends and to make sure he stays grounded. Hiraga shared that both acting and skateboarding are important to him, so he tries to balance his acting pursuits with his skateboarding passion—keeping them separate so he doesn’t lose the joy and satisfaction both of them bring.

Between acting projects, Hiraga says he plays a little harder at the parks, taking more risks now that he has recovered. “I’m able to hurt my body and know that I don’t have to get up at like 6 a.m. the next day,” he says.

While not giving up his skateboarding passion, Hiraga wants to continue sharpening his acting skills. In his next role, he is moving away from his comfort zone and portraying a character Hollywood hasn’t seen him act yet. In January, Hiraga starts working on an indie film where he plays a college student who is a genius. The actor shared that, while he believes he has more “street smarts than book smarts,” he is hard at work practicing his words.

But whatever the future may hold, one thing is certain for Hiraga: he isn’t moving to Los Angeles, or anywhere else, for his acting career. No matter where his acting and skateboarding may take him, he will always end up back in San Fransisco. Hiraga said, “It crafted who I am. To be honest, I don’t think I’m ever gonna leave.”

Anderson .Paak, producer, rapper, and drummer, partnered with the experienced nightclub runners Mark and Ronnie Houston to open his new jazz and R&B club, Andy’s. Since September 25th, .Paak fans have packed into this latest addition to the LA nightlife scene.

Beyond providing an appealing venue for live music, Anderson .Paak brought chef Chris Oh’s talent to devise a casual club menu. Since its opening, many club enthusiasts have asked whether Andy’s offers the full club and restaurant experience.

A Full September Schedule for Anderson .Paak

The opening of Andy’s nightclub ended a particularly prolific month for music star and producer Anderson .Paak. As reported by Thrillist, Anderson .Paak premiered his directorial debut feature film, K-Pops! At the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7th. On September 24th, he performed his GRAMMY-nominated album Malibu at the Hollywood Bowl.

Andy’s opening night followed just one day after Anderson Paak’s Hollywood Bowl performance. He later informed Thrillist of his positive feelings surrounding the accumulation of these events, stating, “I want to use my platform for good, and I want to tell these stories in different mediums and in different ways. So, it feels really cool to see all of these things happening in perfect timing.”

A Venue Designed for Intimate Connections

Anderson .Paak claims that creating his nightclub was more than just an entrepreneurial venture. He informed Thrillist that he wished to craft a place in LA where he and his friends could connect.

“Ever since I moved to Los Angeles, I always wanted to have my own place where people like me could play and musicians could come and hang out.” Paak stated. “Coming up in LA, I always wanted to make a place like that because those were the places I went to get our music heard and to hang out with friends.”

Andy’s appears designed for that end, with warm lighting, vintage appeal, and a close, intimate interior. To create his ideal atmosphere, Anderson .Paak partnered with Mark and Ronnie Houston, a brother duo with much experience in LA nightlife venues.

Mark Houston stated their outlook regarding the new club, claiming, “We create spaces where we create new friendships. Us building this is going to continue that journey together.”

Culinary Experience Recruited for a Full Menu

More than the typical nightclub affair, Andy’s full kitchen menu features plates designed by experienced chef Chris Oh. According to Eater Los Angeles, Oh opened Seoul Sausage, a popular Korean restaurant Umma in San Francisco, over a decade ago. Since then, he has appeared in a variety of cooking competitions.

Another expert entry into Andy’s kitchen is chef Brandon Kida. Oh and Kida had assembled a menu to satisfy late-night cravings, including hamachi crudo with leche de tigre, pastrami bao, Korean barbecue spare ribs, and kimchi fried rice.

The Houston brothers brought in barman Devin Espinosa for Andy’s cocktail menu. One of the club’s feature cocktails is the Yes Lawd!, a mix of pomegranate vodka, Grand Marnier, and lime.

    Journalist Reviews for Andy’s

Between inspiration from a music star and expertise from nightlife and culinary veterans, Andy seems poised to deliver a complete experience that will satisfy any searching for the perfect spot to land a night out.

However, some journalist’s reviews have been tepid.

Patricia Kelly Yeo from Time Out summarizes Andy’s experience with the unenthusiastic phrase, “It was fine.” Yeo notes that the live music typically begins after 10 pm. Before then, the venue primarily functions as a sit-down restaurant. Yeo wasn’t completely taken with the menu or bar offerings. However, she said she enjoyed her stay on her second visit, primarily focusing on the live show and drinks.

Similarly, Brant Cox from The Infatuation posted a review advising nightclub enthusiasts to visit after 9:30 pm to make the most of the live music and intimate setting. Cox observes that the venue’s bands are pleasantly surprising, ranging from soul singers to 80s cover bands.

Regardless of reviews, fans of Anderson .Paak and music, in general, appear drawn to the dream of Andy’s as crowds continue to pack into this new addition to the LA club lineup.

  • Lowrider Soul and Cars: The Cultural Symbol of LA Thrives

Lowrider Soul and Cars: The Cultural Symbol of LA Thrives

Lowrider cars were once stigmatized as being associated with gang activity and were targeted by law enforcement, but they have now evolved into an enduring symbol of Chicano pride. The smooth, romantic sounds of lowrider soul music continue to celebrate the rich heritage as it gains global recognition.

    The Origins of Lowriders

A lowrider car has a lowered suspension, a custom paint job, and hydraulics. The vehicles are low to the ground and can bounce up and down. They emerged in Los Angeles’ Mexican-American communities after World War II.

They were initially seen as creative expressions of identity and soon became showcases of technical car expertise and Chicano pride.

    Lowrider Soul

Although lowriders are often associated with hip-hop from the 90s, their traditional music roots are smooth, emotional R&B ballads from the 50s and 60s that feature romantic lyrics. In contrast to the typically gang-affiliated drivers, the romantic songs reflect the depth of the pain many Chicanos endured at the time.

Lowrider’s soul was a spark of inspiration for many Chicano youth. They found hope in the genre’s introspective themes. Those themes of love and family were a stark contrast to the harsh reality of many lowrider’s lives, which often faced poverty, discrimination, and broken families.

A notable Chicano poet, Luis J Rodriguez, says, “Well, these lowrider guys were tough dudes, many street-and-prison hardened, but they were also notoriously ‘romantic.’”

“I think many of us hung on to the illusions of family and home because we didn’t have good families or homes. Those old R&B songs spoke to our depths,” he said.

    Cultural Recognition

Now, lowriders are seen as cultural centerpieces of LA. Their physical beauty and historical meaning are being celebrated in museums, such as Best in Low at LA’s Petersen Automotive Museum. The museums display the beauty and culture while educating audiences about lowrider history.

Newer bands like Thee Sacred Souls are bringing attention to the music of this subculture. They are helping to preserve and revive the legacy of the lowrider soul for a new generation of listeners.

    Lowrider Soul’s Musical Heritage

Soul music, which was originally rooted in Black culture, found another home with Chicano audiences in the 50s and 60s in Los Angeles. The racial segregation during this time created a unity between Black musicians and Chicano listeners, who became supporters of Black soul music.

Notorious Chicano bands like Thee Midniters and Sunny & the Sunliners fused R&B with their own styles, creating the “Eastside sound” that became synonymous with lowrider culture.

    Lowrider Music Revival

Thee Sacred Souls and Thee Sinseers, modern bands, are bringing life back to lowrider soul by creating original tracks that stay true to the sound of the era. These groups pay homage to influential bands like Thee Midniters, whose music remains a foundation of lowrider soul.

With the globalization of music, lowrider culture has reached beyond its Los Angeles origins. The music and automotives have reached Japan, the UK, and beyond. Japanese lowrider enthusiasts have embraced the aesthetic, crediting Chicanos for their influence.

    Cultural Legacy

Lowrider cars and lowrider soul represent a unique cultural combination of art, music, and identity. They are essential to Los Angeles’ rich history and culture. As lowrider culture continues to garner attention, it demonstrates the resilience of the Chicano community.

Modern lowrider music and events promote family and tradition, separating the cultural icon from stereotypes of gang affiliation. These gatherings are intergenerational celebrations of Chicano heritage. Older lowriders come to pass down music and craftsmanship to younger generations.

Experience a history walkthrough with exhibits like Best in Low, a place for automotive lovers to engage with the culture.

The timeless sounds of lowrider soul continue with Got a Story to Tell, the latest album by Thee Sacred Souls, on Daptone Records. The band will play at London’s Jazz Cafe on October 31.

“I feel like baking is science and cooking is like jazz,” White explains.

Though she can’t master baking, dessert is something White enjoys as a pick-me-up. It’s fitting that White started including ice cream socials in her Suppa Club because her dessert of choice is a chocolate-covered banana with almonds from Baskin-Robbins.

White is known for her TikTok reviews, calling out places like Echo Park’s Donna’s and West Adams’ Highly Likely for sub-par—or even “criminal”—meals. However, she does enjoy one restaurant for a nice dinner, or at least for the drinks. White gravitates toward Camélia for its french fries, desserts, and martinis.

Bringing Her Vision to the Community

White pours her personality into her Suppa Club gatherings. She is inspired by her preferences and nostalgia, but her audience relates to her excitement and enthusiasm for the project. She might not be a good baker, but she brings the perfect roast chicken to a sit-down meal and shares her ideas with the community.
