Many demonstrators sat down in the street, effectively shutting the area down. The LAPD closed Hollywood Boulevard between Orange Drive and Las Palmas and Highland Avenue between Franklin Place and Sunset Boulevard. The disruption in the flow of traffic caused frustration for drivers, who were encouraged to seek alternate routes and avoid the area.

“The LAPD’s objective is to ensure public safety for ALL while facilitating the First Amendment rights of those peacefully demonstrating,” the agency said in a statement. “Equally, the Department will enforce the law when individuals engage in acts of violence.” No arrests were made at the Wednesday protest, and no acts of violence were reported. Roads were cleared by 9 pm that night.

The protest was organized by the groups Jewish Voice for Peace and IfNotNow, who released a joint statement ahead of the demonstration. The news release stated that the Hollywood and Highland protest would be “one of the largest-ever acts of civil disobedience in Los Angeles. It will take place in Hollywood, which has long been a site of organizing for labor rights, critiquing of state violence, and storytelling that speaks truth to power—of which Jewish creatives have often been part.”

Mayor Bass announced that “it has been a source of tremendous turmoil and pain speaking with his son. I am relieved to announce today (Thursday) that the employee is now safe in a neighboring country, Egypt, and out of the war zone. We look forward to welcoming our colleague home.” She was clearly quite relieved to inform the public of the individual’s safety.

The Mayor expressed her gratitude to everyone who worked tirelessly to make this rescue possible. She personally thanked Senior Advisor to the President, Tom Perez, the Biden administration, Sen. Alex Padilla, and Rep. Julia Brownley for their continuous support to ensure the safe return of a fellow Californian.

When the attacks started, the second resident, a mother originally from Camarillo, was visiting family in Gaza and was also witness to the mayhem and devastation. Nabil Alshurafa, her son, told of his mother’s difficult journey to safety. She bravely attempted five times to cross into Egypt, exhibiting incredible fortitude in the face of difficulty. Relief welled up in the family when, at last, the phone call arrived to tell them she had made it out alive.

When reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster that the family endured, Alshurafa said, “She was crying when I spoke to her, and there was a sense of relief knowing she was able to escape. But at the same time, the excitement slowly went away when we started realizing that we still have a lot of family still in Gaza.”

While these two California residents are now safely out of Gaza, there remains uncertainty surrounding their travel plans to return to their homes. To ensure their safe return to their families and loved ones, the community and officials are actively working to facilitate their journey back.

The collaborative initiatives of Mayor Karen Bass, government representatives, and the tenacity of the families involved serve as a shining example of the devotion and commitment of people coming together to guarantee the security and welfare of those impacted by the turbulent events in Gaza. These inspiring tales serve as a reminder of the value of compassion and unity during difficult times as the world observes the region’s ongoing difficulties.

Rising Climate Crisis Transforms California Mountains into ‘Zombie Forests’

Some conifer forests in the Sierra National Forest are already as good as dead, so implies ecologist Avery Hill, who spoke to the Los Angeles Times about a forest in the Sierra Nevada that he described as “eerie.” Among the ecological community, green conifer forests like this one are becoming known as “zombie forests.” Conifer seeds can no longer grow here, so as the forests fade, they will be replaced by other kinds of trees—and this slow demise will have consequences.

Global climate change has altered the world so that the environment around these green conifers can no longer support the next generation. It’s simply gotten too warm. When the wildfires come, as they increasingly do, or the drought or diseases that regularly kill these conifers arrive to do their inevitable work, the seeds dropped by these conifers will not survive. Conifer saplings need cooler weather and wetter soil than the new climate supports.

The conifers will be replaced by other plants that surround the conifers: patchy groupings of arid chaparral shrubs. The landscape will be dramatically different. The carbon sink of the forest will be lost, and each dead conifer stand will marginally accelerate the changing climate. Conifer forests also resist wildfires substantially better than other plants that could be growing here, such as the scrub, and their loss will elevate the wildfire risk in the surrounding areas.

Still, ecologists like Hill see opportunities in the inevitable. Hill told the Los Angeles Times, “It provides almost an experimental space to address some really difficult questions about how we manage ecological systems.” Hill, who works at the California Academy of Sciences, understands that environmental changes like this will continue to occur in the future. He and his colleagues believe now is the time to monitor these inevitable transitions and determine strategies to manage them.

Although Hill does see value in this research opportunity, he pointed out that expectations have to be realistic. “There are management decisions you can make to kind of squeeze out every last opportunity these trees have to survive,” he told the Los Angeles Times, “But if the climate says no, the forest won’t grow.” Hill’s team has projected that the conifer forests will continue to become zombified if current trends hold, with nearly the entirety of the Sierra Nevada unsuitable for conifer saplings by the end of the century. Even if worldwide efforts against climate change substantially reverse these trends, Hill’s team projects that the zombie forests could still double in size in that same time. At this point, there’s already no going back to how things were.

Chris Field, the director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, was quoted as saying, “It’s a really stark reminder of how much climate change has already occurred and how important it is to make sure that the amount that occurs in the future is as little as possible.” The Sierra Nevada is one of the most protected and highly studied natural wonders of California and plays an important role in stabilizing the surrounding climate. The consequences of the expanding zombie forests and the loss of the conifers will affect more than just the surrounding region. Hopefully, the research of scientists like Avery Hill and his team will also have far-reaching consequences, though it will never be enough to fully counteract what has already begun.

Liftoff, LA! Space Shuttle Endeavour’s Rockets Sees Debut

Space shuttle Endeavour’s rockets showcased a successful liftoff, being delicately elevated into the California Science Center. The first large components, giant rockets, were installed at the site where the future space shuttle Endeavour is set to sit.

Solid rocket motors, each the whopping size of a Boeing 757 fuselage, were relocated from a horizontal to a vertical position with the use of a carefully conducted crane. The sensitive instruments weigh 104,000 pounds each, making the matter relatively monumental. They were lowered into place in the new exhibit hosted at the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center. One motor found its place on Tuesday, and the other was implemented on Wednesday.

One hundred seventy-seven pins were used to attach each solid rocket motor to the base of the rocket booster, aka the aft skirt. Each pin holding it together is one inch in diameter and 2 inches in length.

California Science Center President Jeffrey Rudolph stated, “It felt great… We’ve got two solid rocket motors standing tall in the new building now.”

The tops of the rockets are visible from the establishment’s exterior, inviting guests to come and take a look. During the lift, the solid rocket motors could even be seen from the 110 Freeway, making the event more exciting and shouting an unignorable message to the surrounding community.

What transpired this week was the result of six long months of work and a dedicated team dedicated. The permanent exhibit is in the process of being assembled, set to look like a stack configuration as if it were ready for launch. It will be shown as the only surviving U.S. orbiter displayed in this position and the last space shuttle orbiter ever built.

While procedures of this kind are typically performed at NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida—one of the largest buildings by volume in the world, spanning over 50 stories—it is equipped with plenty of cranes and platforms to handle the job. However, as the project was completed at the California Science Center itself, unique techniques were required for the installation. With a careful hand and close precision, the workers put together scaffolding along the aft skirts and got to work inserting the exquisite sequence of connecting pins that will be available for display soon.

Without exceptional alignment, the aft skirt and solid rocket motors could have easily posed an obstacle in terms of pin insertion. However, the craftsmanship of those on the job solidified the quick timeframe expected from those looking forward to seeing the exhibit. Work commenced around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, ending before 1:00 p.m. After they had completed the process, work was done at an even faster pace on Wednesday. The day spanned from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., making a quick project out of the mission at hand. According to Rudolph, “The crew worked really well, did an excellent job, and things came together effectively and quite quickly.”

Next will come another 30 vertical feet of scaffolding and the subsequent installation of external tank attach rings. Those rings will serve as a connection between the solid rocket motors and the huge orange external tank. After that, more scaffolding will be put up on top of the 116-foot solid rocket motors to assist the workers in the installation of the tips of the rockets—the forward assembly, including the nose cone and forward skirt.

The forward skirt will act as the foremost weight-bearing connection between the solid rocket boosters and the external tank, making it an essential component to success. This part should be ready for potentially permanent implementation in early December.

The solid rocket motors make up most of the boosters, stretching 149 feet in length. At liftoff, the white boosters were placed under the Endeavour’s wings, producing over 80% of the lift.

The most dramatic ideas are coming to life in the form of this exhibit, set to occur after the festive holiday season. That’s when we’ll see the external tank go up. After the last week of January, the Endeavour orbiter will be installed. Cranes almost as tall as Los Angeles City Hall will rise from the horizontal position from where it lies, pointing vertically toward the stars for its final pose. The rest of the museum will be built around the feature in a $400M, 20-story venue entitled the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center—something locals are looking forward to.

Currently, the Endeavour sits at a temporary display center where it will be shown until December 31st. Soon after, guests are expecting to be able to see the exhibit at its permanent location.

Office of Food Equity Is Established in LA County

In a groundbreaking decision, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors gave a nod to the creation of the Office of Food Equity on Tuesday, November 7. It is a strategic move considering the ongoing battle against food insecurity. The decision has marked a crucial step toward a unified front in addressing the alarming issue. The formation of the Office of Food Equity is likely to impact over a million households in the county annually, with Black and Latino residents disproportionately affected. There is double the likelihood for these residents to fall into food insecurity.

Cinny Kennard, the executive director of the Annenberg Foundation and co-chair of the LA County Food Equity Roundtable, shared his view on the new office, describing it as an “air traffic control center” that will connect various stakeholders involved in the day-to-day efforts to alleviate food insecurity. The LA County Food Equity Roundtable was born during the pandemic and has now laid the foundation for this initiative where the county and three foundations came together, namely the Annenberg Foundation, the California Community Foundation, and the Weingart Foundation.

During the pandemic, it was evident that a lack of coordination hindered the collective efforts against food insecurity. Kennard believes the Office of Food Equity would act as a central command post to foster collaboration among community partners such as food banks, growers, and small markets. This is a welcomed move that aims to streamline diverse efforts to battle food insecurity into a coordinated response.

Natalie Flores Blackner, CEO of Nourish LA, a local nonprofit formed during the pandemic, has shed light on the quality of the food discarded during those challenging times. Initiated through grassroots efforts and local collaborations, Nourish LA worked to minimize food waste while providing for struggling families.

Nourish LA is currently conducting food drives at strategic locations such as St. Mark’s Church in Venice, UCLA University Village, and a hub in Santa Monica. Leveraging the Office of Food Equity, Blackner aspires to secure the necessary resources to extend the reach of her food drives. Her goal is not only to address immediate needs but also to create sustainable solutions to alleviate food insecurity. She wants to educate communities about food waste and support businesses that will contribute to meeting the crisis.

Beyond immediate relief from food insecurity, the LA County Food Equity Roundtable has shared a comprehensive strategic plan to combat the issue in the long term. This includes facilitating urban farming through responsible zoning policies, addressing food waste, and enhancing public access to vital nutrition assistance programs. The Office of Food Equity is all set to implement and coordinate these initiatives, providing a multifaceted approach to address the root causes of food insecurity.

As the county braces itself on this new initiative, officials have received a 90-day window to present a staffing plan and budget for the Office of Food Equity. This planning reflects a coordinated and strategic response to the persistent issue of food insecurity. This decision by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors marks a significant milestone in the county’s ongoing efforts and a great boost to their creation of a sustainable and equitable food system.
