From personalized study assistants to adaptive reading tools and Socratic tutors, new edtech platforms are using artificial intelligence to make learning more accessible, targeted, and effective.

Artificial intelligence is changing the education system by transforming the way students learn and educators teach. A new generation of edtech platforms is using AI to create more personalized learning experiences, helping students access academic support tailored to their individual needs.

From peer-to-peer study platforms that organize course-specific resources to tools that adapt textbooks in real time, AI-driven education solutions are designed to meet learners at their current level. Whether it is a college student preparing for final examinations or a third-grade student struggling with reading skills, these platforms demonstrate that personalized and accessible education can be achieved at scale.

Several AI-powered companies are now building tools that focus not on replacing teachers or students’ efforts, but on strengthening the learning process.

Bringing Course-Specific AI Support to Students

StuDocu has developed an AI learning layer on a platform that serves 40 million monthly active users and includes 65 million peer-uploaded documents organized by university and course. Unlike general-purpose AI systems that may produce inaccurate information, StuDocu’s AI is trained on course-specific academic content, allowing it to provide more relevant support for students.

The platform enables learners to create personalized flashcards, generate mock exams, and interact with uploaded documents through AI-powered chat sessions. According to StuDocu, students using its AI tools are four to five times more likely to retain information and 30 times more likely to upload content, indicating stronger engagement with learning materials.

Tyler Kirkland, COO of StuDocu, said the platform’s academic focus gives its AI a distinct advantage.

“The content that we had at that course level was hyper specific, hyper local, and actually provided way more context and enriched data for students to leverage AI. It’s much less likely to hallucinate than normal Gen AI because it has much more context of the course, and it’s much more relevant and specific to their intended outcome.” 

Kirkland added that AI tools are also encouraging deeper participation among students.

“Students that end up on the AI tools are much more retentive — more likely to return and much more engaged with the product. They’re 30 times more likely to add content and four to five times more likely to retain.” 

He said the company’s goal is to position AI as a learning companion rather than a shortcut.

“I hope that more and more students start to see it as kind of a tutor in their pocket and just how powerful it can be. We want to empower and enable students, we’re not trying to just give them the answer and let them move on.” 

Adaptive Reader Makes Grade-Level Learning More Accessible

While StuDocu focuses on higher education resources, Adaptive Reader addresses a different challenge by ensuring students can access content regardless of their reading ability.

The platform was built around the idea that a student’s reading level should not restrict what they are capable of learning. Using AI, Adaptive Reader creates side-by-side versions of existing texts that can be simplified, translated, or decoded for phonics. Instead of replacing original material, the platform provides additional support that helps students engage with grade-appropriate content.

The approach has helped students with learning differences participate in AP English classes, while English language learners can understand academic material in their native language as they continue developing English literacy skills.

Ethan Pierce, Founder of Adaptive Reader, highlighted the importance of providing appropriate support for students who are behind their expected reading level.

“It almost seems like cruel and unusual punishment to send one of my sophomores home with a grade level text when they’re reading in the third grade level. For a student who’s two or more years behind grade level, there needs to be scaffolds and supports in order to help them fully comprehend the text.” 

The platform also helps students transition into English-language learning environments.

“If you have a student who is new to learning in English, they can read it side by side in Pashto,  they understand that, and then come to the English language grade level material knowing what that paragraph says, rather than trying to guess while they’re developing those literacy skills.” 

Pierce said the company is expanding its reach through new partnerships with publishers.

“We’re launching over a dozen new publisher partnerships. Our mission to be able to adapt any book for every reader is really to make sure that we don’t have to be confined to the book being this singular manuscript anymore.”  

Using Socratic AI to Strengthen Math Skills

For mathematics education, Thinkverse is taking a different approach by using AI to guide students through problem-solving rather than providing immediate answers.

The platform’s Socratic AI asks questions, identifies misconceptions, and helps students develop prerequisite skills before moving ahead. Created with curriculum experts from Harvard Education School, Thinkverse is currently used in 40–50 districts across approximately 15 states. The company reports that students using the platform have achieved double-digit gains on state math assessments. A teacher-facing analytics dashboard also provides AI-generated insights into class-wide misconceptions, helping educators focus instruction more effectively.

Sean Shan, Co-founder and CTO of Thinkverse, explained that productive struggle is central to meaningful learning.

“Our AI never gives students the answer directly. It uses Socratic questioning to probe student thinking and guide them to find solutions independently, while identifying and correcting specific misconceptions in real-time. That productive struggle is where the real learning happens.”

Shan said the platform’s results show that AI can support measurable academic improvement.

“We’re in 40 to 50 districts across about 15 states, and we’re seeing students achieve significant double-digit improvements on state math assessments. The platform was built to ensure that AI is actually used for learning, not just getting answers.” 

Looking ahead, Thinkverse aims to create a connected system where educators and support teams can work from shared student data.

“Our 6- to 12-month vision is a unified Math Operating System that connects all school stakeholders — teachers, coordinators, tutors — with shared student proficiency data. Right now everyone operates in silos; we want to make sure everyone is working from the same information about each student.” 

Connecting Learning with Career Outcomes

Gray DI’s College Companions platform combines academic support with career guidance for college students. Its Cocoa Courses tool functions as an AI tutor based on professor-approved course materials, while Cocoa Careers links students’ degrees with possible career paths using data from 30 million alumni profiles.

The platform follows a “trainer, not a doer” philosophy, using AI to guide students through questions and explanations instead of simply delivering answers. Early results from nursing programs show HESI exam score improvements of 10–20%, while students have also reported feeling more comfortable asking questions they may hesitate to raise in a classroom.

Bob Atkins, CEO of Gray DI, said the platform is designed to strengthen students’ own abilities.

“We built College Companions to be a trainer, not a doer. The AI provides interactive guidance to build student skills — it doesn’t just hand them answers. Every response is designed to strengthen their ability to think and learn, not to replace that process.” 

Atkins said creating a safe learning environment is another important benefit of AI-based support.

“We’ve seen nursing students using Cocoa Courses improve their HESI exam scores by 10 to 20 percent, going from scores like 1000 to 1200. Students also tell us they feel safe asking questions they’d be embarrassed to ask in class. That psychological safety matters.” 

He added that future AI tools could provide increasingly personalized learning experiences.

“Our goal is to combine a student’s learning profile with their career interests so the AI can tailor its tutoring approach, if you’re a math student interested in sports analytics, your examples should reflect that. We want every student’s experience to feel built for them.” 

AI’s Role in Building the Next Generation of Learning

The platforms driving the AI education movement believe that artificial intelligence should support learning rather than replace it. Whether through course-specific study assistance, adaptive reading support, guided mathematics tutoring, or career-focused college tools, these platforms are designed to keep students actively involved in their own progress.

As AI-powered education systems continue to expand, their success will not be measured only by user engagement or adoption rates. The defining measure will be whether these technologies help students understand more deeply, build stronger skills, and achieve meaningful learning outcomes.
