From smarter lesson planning to accessible education tools, new AI systems are reshaping classrooms while keeping educators at the center.

Artificial intelligence is moving beyond experimentation in education and becoming a practical tool for classrooms, campuses, and learning support systems. Across K-12 schools and post-secondary institutions, AI-powered platforms are changing how students interact with lessons, how teachers design instruction, and how institutions address individual learning needs.

The shift is not simply about adding technology to education. The emerging challenge is integrating AI in ways that improve understanding, accessibility, and teaching outcomes while preserving the role of educators in guiding learning.

Building a Connected Instruction System 

Min Sun, Co-Founder and CEO of Colleague AI, developed the platform from NSF-funded research at the University of Washington. The system combines curriculum planning, lesson delivery, and student assessment into one connected workflow, allowing educators to move away from fragmented tools and data systems.

Unlike platforms designed only to generate educational content, Colleague AI focuses on helping students think through problems. Its student-facing AI uses Socratic questioning, encouraging learners to explore ideas instead of depending on direct answers. One teacher used the platform to create a live flood response simulation in under ten minutes, a project that previously required weeks of preparation.

Sun explained, “Our AI technology, the student-facing feature, will never tell the correct answer directly to students. It uses a Socratic questioning approach, embedded learning science behind it. We can actually learn about the students’ learning style, their trajectory, to get the students to learn fast, but to a deeper level.”

Sun said that combining educational data into one system is essential for improving instruction. “If you only have multiple tools, the data still exists siloed in separate places. Teachers still need to link curriculum, assessment, and student learning data manually. That will not fundamentally improve instructional quality because teachers need a coherent data system to power their instructional improvement cycle.” 

The platform is designed around the idea that AI should support teachers rather than replace them. “Some of the teachers have given us feedback: working with us, they don’t feel they’re adopting a new technology. What they feel is they’re transforming their instructional practice. The training we give to them feels like professional learning about their instruction—about how to teach students better—not about adopting a new tool,” Sun said.

Expanding Accessibility Through AI

For Daniel Goerz, CEO of Habitat Learn, the focus began with a challenge in higher education, in which students with disabilities are losing critical classroom support because of budget reductions. The platform initially operated as an “Uber Eats for note-taking,” connecting students with human note-takers. It later evolved into a broader AI-powered accessibility system.

Today, Habitat Learn provides live transcription, customizable text-to-speech options with natural voices and accents, and a Study Assistant designed to guide students’ thinking rather than provide answers.

According to Goerz, “The Study Assistant is trained to emulate a real human learning strategist, not to give students the answer, but to scaffold their thinking and de-escalate their stress. Generic AI tools can be overly positive or simplistic. We built something that responds the way a trained support counselor actually would.” 

Goerz said accessibility remains central to the platform’s mission. “Our north star is equal access to college for students with disabilities, because the research is clear that it directly correlates with meaningful employment outcomes. Accessibility isn’t just an accommodation. For a lot of students, it’s the difference between a career and not having one.” 

The platform’s foundation came from years of human-generated support data. “We started with over a million sets of human-generated notes, essentially the Uber Eats of note-taking, connecting students who needed accommodation support with people who could help. As AI improved, we realized we could rebuild the entire accessibility layer and make that level of support available to every student.” 

Strengthening the Technology Behind AI Learning

While AI tools attract attention for their classroom applications, reliable infrastructure remains critical to their success. Aaron Walker, Founder and CEO of Overbyte IT, has focused on building scalable systems that allow educational platforms to operate consistently.

The company supports Commonwealth Charter Academy, the largest online K-12 public school in the U.S., helping to transition its platform from a manual deployment process to a Kubernetes-based system. Overbyte is also developing AI-powered historical personas that allow students to interact with curriculum-based figures while maintaining accuracy controls.

“We’re building AI personas directly into the curriculum; a student could have a real conversation with a historical figure to make the lesson come alive. But the model has to be trained exclusively on our client’s in-house curriculum. The moment it starts pulling from outside sources, we’ve lost control over accuracy, and in a student-facing environment, that’s not acceptable,” said Aaron Walker.

Walker highlighted the impact of stronger infrastructure: “Before the migration, a deployment could take hours and required the full application to go down. For an online school that tracks attendance for state funding, that downtime is real money at stake. Now we can push multiple deployments a day with minimal disruption and student access stays stable.” 

He added that safeguards remain the biggest priority in educational AI systems. “The biggest technical challenge isn’t building the AI feature; it’s the guardrails. If a student is talking to an AI version of a historical figure and it starts fabricating information, we’ve undermined the entire learning experience. The model has to stay strictly within the curriculum we’ve approved.”

AI Supporting, Not Replacing, Educators

The platforms shaping the future of education exemplify how technology works best when it strengthens human expertise. Whether creating interactive learning experiences, improving accessibility for students with disabilities, or maintaining dependable digital systems, AI’s most effective role is to enhance the decisions and efforts of educators rather than replace them.
